The exchange for term is dollars. You've gotta figure this is just a quick cash grab for Thornton, who will likely leave for a contender after this year once the Sharks miss the playoffs.

This guy must have Dustin Brown as his agent, 8M is more than 1M per goal only having 7 smile. I like Jumbo Joe, I remember commenting when thought it was 6.5M, this is just too much. So will NHL act surprised when they have another lockout with these insane contracts wink? Never seen a guy get a huge raise for having what was a crap season if anything. What did he have like 50 points, is this some retirement reward? Was some team offering him 10 million for 1 year that had to be outbid smile?

Would you rather overpay Thornton for one year at 8 mil or pay him 6 mil for 2-3 years when Vlasic and Jones's extensions kick in?
