Sparking the Oilers

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 27, 2023
Published: Oct. 27, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Oilers need a stop gap for the creativity and excellence of McDavid.

They have some interesting assets who are not currently difference-makers and I think there is probably a mutually beneficial trade for the Habs.
Trades
MTL
  1. Holloway, Dylan
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Holloway has had a rough start to his career in EDM. He's a better player than he has shown. Not sure why it's not working out, but I would like to see what MSL can do for his confidence.
EDM
  1. Monahan, Sean
Additional Details:
We all love Monahan. He is the gift that keeps on giving. He looks so good in the early goings and he is not even playing in the top 6 (honestly, how do you put up that much offence playing with Pearson & Gallagher?). We are gonna be able to trade him at the deadline, but if he keeps this up the Habs may find it hard not to resign him, so we gotta ship him sooner than later.

Call me crazy, but I’d give Monahan a 5 yr extension. People forget that he’s only 28. He’d only be 33 at the end of that deal. He can C or W, faceoff machine, offensive ability, défensive acumen… sign me up for more of that.

Trade him for assets but tell him you'll resign him in the offseason to a 5 year, win win.

He's 29 so 34... But I take your meaning. I am not against keeping him, but only if the Habs are gonna go for it, and that means "buying" at the deadline and swapping futures for present.

If you do not believe the Habs can compete, we gotta trade him because you will have Beck and Kapanen pushing for Roster spots as soon as next year, and they "should" be able to do a decent job at a much lower cap hit than Monahan & Dvorak.

They have absolutely nothing coming so trading Holloway right now to rest their window isnt the worst idea as things are looking as though Draisaitl will be moved if this continues with the horrific defence and depth. McDrai hid a lot if warts. Go the Chicago route and blow it up, theres no point with hoarding prospects, middling ones at that. Holloway is a at best a 2nd line wing with speed/size that can score 20 goals.

We better be in a wildcard spot or better at the TDL if we do that.

3 year term, the AAV is meaningless in the scheme of things with their window so go a bit higher instead of taking more bad contracts for picks. I have it at 5.75M AAV. Thats only 17.25M committed instead of a 5 year 4.5-5M AAV with 25M committed.

If Monahan does get dealt, people will be very surprised at the return. Personally, they should resign him, people misunderstand his play right now as they think this is Sean Monahan from the last 2 years in Calgary. Before the injury last season many GMs inquired around November.

Reminds me a lot of the Lehkonen returns and Justin Barron being mentioned and Avs fans, of course, laughed it off and were dead wrong. Same as Oilers fans with Kulak whom was 'garbage'
It doesnt matter what you post, homers are going to homer. I had a whole thread with Kulak, Lehkonen and Chiarot going for less then they returned in reality and had nothing but toxity and negative comments. Par for the course here.

They cant do anything right now. Holland has absolutely no idea how to work a salary cap. They can only cary the minimum amount of skaters. Not exactly a difficult prediction kind of like saying the Earth will keep moving.

I think this is the kind of return Hughes would target. A player with a known quantity of upside, who fits into the age range and the culture, and who won't be too expensive to resign since he's not living up to his draft pedigree.

Holloway is pretty overrated. I've seen him in person. Doesnt have the scoring or instincts. I rather they keep Monahan. This seems like one of those nepotism trades to reunite Wisconsin players.

Maybe. That's what they said about Dach & Newhook though. I'm sure Caufield would sing a different tune about his old Badger teammate.

That guy is still in there, he's just dormant.

Something that don't happen a lot in the NHL. The last player who did that I belive it was Plekanec.

Not impressed with Newhook. All the physical gifts with speed and shot but no hockey sense. Lets a lot of plays die. I understand how he went in the 1st round and why the Avs gave up on him.

Plekanec was the best. Such an underrated pest. Still have his 2011 Heritage Jersey from the Calgary outdoor game. Monahan is probably their best center since Plekanec

7 games is not a large enough sample to judge. He was actually great as a winger, but he's not a center IMO, though I'm giving him until game 22 to prove me wrong cause I wanna give him a 20 game sample.

Yes, he definitely cant be a center. Anderson is an absolute beast right now and Slafkovsky looks much better but Newhook doesnt fit on that line.

Would you move Newhook to Zuke wing, promote Monahan, and call up Lias Andersson?

Monahan needs to be on the wing to Suzuki/Caufield once Dvorak is healthy in 2 weeks. Monahan/Suzuki can split the draws accordingly. Dvorak should be centering Slafkovsky and Anderson, wins draws and can park himself in front of the net as the bumper guy. Much better compliment to those two.

So Newhook slots in as 3C?
