Canucks Roster with Upgraded RD

Created by: HockeyFan1991
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 27, 2023
Published: Oct. 27, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Accurate/Prorated
LTIR Enabled: Yes
Season Days: 192
Days Remaining: 174
Season Remaining: 91%
Projected Cap Hit Prior To Days Remaining Tooltip : $86,557,605
Description
Canucks get the much needed upgrades to their RD that they need, while ridding themselves of Myers & Garland and adding some cap flexibility for the future.

Canucks would need to keep salary on Garland and chuck in a sweetner for Peeke, but he's a much needed 3rd RD upgrade

Myers for Lebanac is primary a money save for SJ. Myers is only owed $1M in salary this season, significantly lower than his cap hit, whereas Lebanc is owed $5.875M, $1.1M MORE than his cap hit. SJ saves $5M+ in real cash in this trade, which is ideal for a rebuilding team

Tanev would cost a 1st round pick but has history and chemistry with Canucks and could play alongside Hughes, allowing Hronek to move down to second pair, giving Canucks a much better rounded top 4

What is the point in that Labanc trade? Especially with both retained

Tanev is not worth a first round pick.

@Rob32sjsharks Explanation in the description - its primary a cash-saving trade for SJ. Myers is only owed $1M in salary this season, significantly lower than his cap hit, whereas Lebanc is owed $5.875M, $1.1M MORE than his cap hit. SJ saves $5M+ in real cash in this trade, which is ideal for a rebuilding team

@Ktownchef Not by himself but if Nucks want retention, which they would need, then thats likely the price they are paying for a top 4 RD. Thats pretty standard market rate (see Hronek trade last year)

Sharks aren’t using their final retention spot to land a dfenseman they don’t even need. Ludicrous offer.

But it wastes the last retention slot and sharks lose the chance of gaining a 2nd or 1st from itemizing the retention slot.

@Oleg & @Rob32sjsharks Fair points but...
1. No one on that roster is returning a 1st or 2nd, even with retained salary, unless you're talking about ownership just eating a complete bullet on Hertl or Couture.
2. Lebanc's contract expires July 1st, so that retention spot is freed back up as of next season
3. Considering the awful team attendance and the fact that revenues will be way down, I can see ownership prioritizing business decisions over hockey decisions. And you can't argue with a non-competitive team saving almost $5M in real cash in a year where revenues will be down

It should be but in all my teams I have a decent player and a first going for tanev so I gotta imagine they get that offer it’s not much more to pay

Yes but all I’m saying is remove the retention and I would consider. Next year I fully expect sharks to be at or near the cap floor but this year they have to try and grab picks and Barabanov or Duclair value could be bumped up if the sharks take a bad contract and retain 50%. And our owner wants to turn around more than save money (dude has something like 7 billion he’s not hurting for money and is a die hard hockey fan)

@Rob32sjsharks Barabanov and Duclair make $2.5M and $3M respectively, there's not much to be retained on those contracts. Sharks aren't bumping their value up much by retaining 50%. Could maybe get a 3rd for either but there's teams that can absorb those cap hits without retention come deadline time

And I am sure even billionaires like their enterprises to save money when applicable. I think if you asked him "would you rather save $5M in hard cash or maybe get a slightly better draft pick", I think he's taking the former.

I'd absolutely take that as a CBJ fan. Take on the slightly higher cap hit for the better player and a pick.

@CaseyFlyman Peeke has definitely not been great in Columbus but I still think he's a solid player and would benefit greatly from a change of scenery and playing in Rick Tocchet's system

Fair but Tina team in a cap crunch trying to add 1 final piece or two would love to get Barabanov at 1.25 (which would be like 500k at the deadline! And give us a 3-4 mil cap hit in return so the can turn around and grab another piece two! That might get us a 2nd and a 4th or 5th.
And like I said next year sharks will be at cap floor and likely same in 25 then by 26/27 sharks will be improved enough to attract fans back and hopefully make the playoffs addding more revenue

Money has never been an issue in SJ. Hasso could buy Aquaman with the change in his couch. Saving money to take cap dump myers may have value for Arizona or Anaheim but is not relevant for SJ
