Flames likely decline. Grizz is of no value to them.

B’s will hold onto Geekie. They have plenty of 3rd pair d.

Couple of points.

1. If they keep Hanifin, Grz provides little value other than cap filler to reduce retention. That said, if they trade Hanifin… he’s a clean replacement at probably 1/2 the cost next year.

2. I’m going to intrigued to see what would need to be added to Lysell and a first to make it worthwhile for Calgary.

Grizz won’t re-sign there, he’d leave via free agency. That’s why he has no value to Calgary.

I do believe pending FA will sign in Calgary, but the question is will Calgary offer the money to make it worth their while.

Either way, most teams don’t have cap space and have to incorporate cap filler or retention or some combination of both.

If the choice is Grz or Geekie plus 1.8m more in retention as cap filler, do you assume they’d prefer Geekie in that scenario because of the extra year?

My assumption is they’d take Grz and try to flip him with retention. Same with DeBrusk if it were him.

A young American with the ability to go free agent is not going to re-sign unless they give him an offer he can’t refuse just because of tax implications. Throw in the fact they are a dumpster fire in the middle of nowhere…pretty much zero chance to re-sign him. He will have plenty of suitors.

As far as flipping, If the deal is done at the deadline there is no time to unless they are working on flipping him at the same time they are working the original deal. 🤷🏻‍♂️

A deal with Bruins will likely need to be done in advance of the trade deadline like Bo Hovart last year.

There are only so many jobs available at premium money. The tax rate difference between the US and Canada can be overcome.

The fact that it’s Calgary can’t. Cap going up next year. He will have plenty of options. Taking one of the worst without exploring others would be a big mistake. 🤷🏻‍♂️

He’s in the range of free agents that I think you can buy out of free agency. There is some risk for him he could get left without a chair. Most likely he’d be flipped to another team, because Calgary does have a hard time keeping players. I don’t believe that is because of the city. I think it’s more the status of the franchise, the owners, and the facilities

If you made a list of the most to least desirable cities in the NHL Calgary is in the bottom 3.

If you take Fort Worth, put it in Northern Canada, without Dallas as a neighbor, nothing else around, and worse taxes. You have Calgary. It’s not a destination city for free agents.

Matt Grzelcyk is a solid starter. He is the type of free agent that will go to the best salary and opportunity. If the contract is right, I could easily see him sign. Hes not in the range of free agents that is likely going to have 5 or 6 bidders

He will probably be several teams 3rd or 4th choice
