Ottawa Senators Panic Edition

Created by: SickoSens
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 4, 2023
Published: Nov. 4, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First things first Mathieu Darche to be hired as Senators GM

Then Claude Julien to replace DJ Smith as head coach.

Obviously these trades can’t come immediately, as Chabot is currently on LTIR, but these trades I think you can make throughout the year.

Pinto Signs for 900k because zero leverage. On “LTRI” in place of suspension.

Chabot and Brannstrom off to Seattle in return for more defensive minded players in Larsson and Bjorkstrand, this will help Seattles problem of goal scoring and help Ottawa problem of defence, also help with Claude Juliens scheme. I also feel like Jarventie will show he is NHL ready and slide into the Krakens top 9, also helping with goals.

Batherson and Kubalik off to Philly, again to bring in another two-way guy in Travis Konecny, also getting Deslauriers and bring back Mete for depth. Bonks father was a Ottawa legend so bringing in him would be ideal is a blockbuster trade. I don’t see Batherson being happy with playing in Philly so he would probably be flipped to another team, my choice being ducks, as they seem to be pushing for a playoff spot.

Quick goalie swap with Sharks, I think Blackwood can bounce back infront of a good defensive team, and will free up some salary for Ottawa for scratches and the eventual return for Pinto. I think sharks flip Forsberg to Carolina for an aging Raanta and picks.

Ottawa loses a lot of picks and prospects in these trades but I believe they will go for a win now mode, and really try and stack the team for now and the future. Also it will be hard to slot Pinto into the lineup so trading Joseph for a prospect or picks in the future is also a possibility. This still gives the team options.

So the Flyers give up the best player and best prospect in the deal and receive a bag of scraps, a good pick, and a solid player back? Yeah no thanks.

Batherson and Konecny have very similar value, the added prospects and picks puts that way over the edge so we get depth players back and a prospect. Seems pretty fair to me. Y’all can keep Batherson if you want, just thought you rather flip him for picks and a pretty good top 6 guy. Change the 2nds you get to a 1st and I think that’s more then a fair trade

I haven't seen much of his play, but is there a reason people seem to be so down on Chabot lately? Besides that, I think the value of the Seattle trade seems pretty good in a vacuum, though I'm not sure the Kraken would pull the trigger given their roster construction and how well Bjorkstrand has been playing.

It's just that while Chabot is an excellent offensive D-Man, he is weak defensively and for the Sens to get better, they need some more 2-way players. Also, Sanderson and Chychrun are ahead of him on the LHD depth chart so he either plays 3rd pair or has to play RD. He just isn't a great fit in Ottawa anymore.

Also injury history

1. This one is awful in value for Ottawa

- We don't even know where that 2024 1st round pick (OTT) pick will end up, considering all the injuries already and the management/coaching staff situation

- Jarventie is probably the best Sens prospect once Greig graduates (which he is doing this season). He is a LEGIT Top-6 prospect. He was an early 2nd and his stock has gone up since.

- Erik Brannstrom literally crushed 3rd pairing role last season in his 23 y/o season.

- Jacob Bernard-Docker doesn't have a ton of value but has been doing well since his call-up, good GFA/60 and xGFA/60 stats, despite a lot of minutes and a hard task

- Larsson is an excellent defensive D-man but he is 31 y/o and has ONE year left after this season

- Bjorkstrand is very good middle-six winger but is 28 y/o and has TWO years left after this season

Now Thomas Chabot... I mean, the guy is 2nd in TOI/GP since 2018-19, 18th in PPG among D-men. He is Elite in transition and drives offense like few do. He is not perfect defensively and some people focus on that but D-men who drive the offense and excel in transition don't spend as much time defending... which is something some just don't realize.

I would like to have Larsson to play him WITH Chabot... but I would NOT trade Chabot for Larsson/Bjorkstrand considering age/contracts so imagine adding Jarventie, a 1st and Brannstrom for that, HARD decline

2. This one is more fair but I wouldn't do it (unless I'd knew 99.9% that Konecny would extend in Ottawa at a reasonable contract)

- Deslauriers and Mete have zero value. I would not want to add Deslauriers contract actually. Let's say Lassi Thomson doesn't have value left too

- Konecny vs Batherson, TK has better value right now BUT he only has ONE year after the season while Batherson has 3 more seasons under 5.0 AAV

So What would be the difference in value between the 2? Let's be GENEROUS and say that it is 2024 1st round pick (DET) + Kubalik (which was basically the return for DeBrincat)

- What is Oliver Bonk worth? Zack Ostapchuk, Tyler Boucher and 2025 2nd round pick (OTT)?

3. Immediate no. Ottawa does NOT want to swap Forsberg for Blackwood while spending a 4th round pick too. Even if they wanted, they can't because their newly guy signed 5 years would be pissed (as he signed in Ottawa to play with his long time buddy), which would hurt the capacity of attracting UFAs really badly.

The Canadian delusion of spare parts and busts for star players from US teams continues. i thought we had isolated this to Edmonton and toronto but its spread
