Chicago is just a placeholder. Toronto finds a rebuilding team willing to take on Kampf's contract for a 3rd round pick. I didn't mean to move a player from Chicago either, it was just supposed to be Entwhistle to the minors to get placeholder Chicago back down to the 23 player roster limit.

Unfortunately, I feel like Nylander has greater value than this would bring to Toronto. On paper is one thing, but the question of "what does a player bring to a team" begs my answer that Nylander is worth more as a top flight stud forward than Tanev and Hanifin are collectively to the same team's defence. Reason being Tanev's age and limited usefulness going forward. Toronto would gain in one department (majorly) but dip heavily in the other. It would take Bertuzzi and Domi stepping up huge and at least potting 40-50 points a piece just to replace Nylander's offence alone, let alone what they were supposed to add on top of that.

If Nylander would sign an extension with Calgary, this would be a no-brainer yes for me, for Calgary to get him. With an actual superstar forward, the Flames could begin a real re-tool without having to do a heavy rebuild.

The only thing I'll add on the other side, is that the Flames would have to find a way to replace Hanifin's presence, what he brings. Whether via trade, free agency or whatever.

I dunno. The way I see it is McDavid is a free agent in 2026 and I expect BB to do anything if he can get McDavid to come to Toronto. Convenient how Tavares' and Marner's contracts both expire the year before in 2025, just in time to free up a ton of cap space to pursue a sign and trade for McDavid before he becomes UFA. Even with Tavares off the books (or making a lot less on a new contract) the Leafs won't be able to afford to sign McDavid plus give extensions with the fat raises Nylander and Marner both expect to get meaning one of them will have to go to make room for McDavid. BB always valued soft little johnny over Tkachuk, I figure he'll make the same mistake with Nylander and Marner, prioritizing Marner and letting Willy go because he really believes he will get McDavid.

Naturally Calgary only trades for Nylander if they get Lindholm extended first.

Honestly, hopefully for Leafs fans, the regime of Shanahan and company is toast by the time it happens, but whoever is in charge should absolutely try and get McDavid on board, if they think they can actually build the right team around him. Maybe Matthews would want a trade to Arizona, seeing as they will obviously have a new arena in 3 years because Gary Bettman is a genius, right? And it could give the Leafs the supporting cast it would need. At this point, as the Leafs, if given a choice, I'd take Nylander at 10 or 10.5m over Marner at his probable ask of 12 or 12.5+

I'd take Nylander over Marner even if Marner cost less. The point is I think the MLSE board, Shanahan and Treliving will all see it the other way around. They'll lowball Willy, wind up trading him and offer Marner 12.5m or more.
