Keys to being a good GM

Created by: Kyle_Okposo_Lover
Team: 2024-25 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 10, 2023
Published: Nov. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Lock up long term talent on lower AAV deals. Invest in talent young
2. Stagger contracts for different years, make it so for older players you always have the ability to ship off old players on expiring contracts
3. Draft goalies a lot. Use those 3rd to 5th round picks on goalies all the time
4. Draft, trade and sign for maximum value. Real life is literally like a video game. Use the OKC Thunder method. Draft picks are the only currency that has concrete value, so use that to your advantage.
5. Play youth. Unless its a tight playoff race or a Stanley Cup run, get them experience.
6. When rebuilding, ship off expiring deals no matter what. It almost never works out to keep them.
7. When rebuilding, take on bad deals but never buy them out. Dead money is the worst.
8. Design a front office and coaching staff of young, analytically driven heads. Math is the future of the sport, take advantage now. Coaches should not rely on it, but they should be aware. General Managers and their teams need to utilize it

With that said, here is blowing up NYI including Sorokin. This will never happen and this isnt all stuff id do right away. But I would 100% overhaul the entire roster. Having multiple 1sts through 2028 and a load of other picks in the 40 to 100 range will secure depth and top end talent. Id keep Sorokin unless I got an offer even better than this. Id need 3 1sts and more to move him. So dont take the moves too seriously.

Fire coaching staff and front office. New guys:
Dan MacKinnon-- President of hockey operations and general manager
James Boyd-- Assistant General Manager
Mitch Love-- Head Coach
John Gruden-- Assistant Coach, Powerplay

Unconventional Trade. Stamkos walks to Tampa scrambles to find someone to replace him. They move an unprotected 1st 4 years out, proving they do not care about picks after they are contending as now is the time to go all in

  4. 2025 1st round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Well, WPG fans you asked for it. You want him, this is the price.

18OVR
2025 1st is top 10 protected
WPG
  1. Pulock, Ryan
Additional Details:
Schmidt will cost around a 2nd or 3rd to dump, so that difference plus Barron and the two picks is what will get you Pulock. A cost controlled top 20 RD is worth this because of his great term and even better AAV.

Pulock somehow decides to waive because its somewhat close to where he grew up I guess?
10.
NYI
  1. Bobrovsky, Sergei
  2. Knight, Spencer
  3. 2026 1st round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Here we go. It is time. Will this ever f----g happen? No. But in this imaginary world where he asks out before the deal kicks in, this is what he could get.

2026 1st has no protections, 2027 1st becomes 2028 1st if top 3

2027 1st Round Pick (FLA)
FLA
  1. Sorokin, Ilya
Additional Details:
In the end, Florida gets off Bobs contract and gets Sorokin. They lose 2 1sts and Knight at that cost. IMO Sorokin is worth that without Bob in the deal so this shouldnt ruffle any feathers-- I hope

A 2028 first round pick? I'm not trading Brock Nelson at 50% retained for a 13 year old

Its a masive gamble. But to get an unprotected 1st for a team who is sure to be bad then is worth it. id rather wait the extra 3-4 years on the pick to take a chance of it being top 3-5 than to know we are gonna get a pick in the 20s or even 30-32 range. Plus any rebuild is at least taking 3-4 years to even sniff the playoffs again and we have plenty of assets that can get us picks in the 25-50 range anyways, where the talent in that area is always very similar

You are so pressed lmao what. I said if he walks. Has he signed an extension? No. So this is IF he walks. He didnt say he was 100% gonna be in Tampa next season lol. Plus honeslty even if he does this move still makes sense.

and yet he hasnt because the team has yet to commit to him. So you just entirely proved my point! Like literally exactly the point.

Because how about this. TB needs to get the cap to figure out what they can give him., but tell yourself what you need to do make it seem like you have a clue.

Vegas doesn't need Engvall or that contract. The entire bottom six and tons of prospects in the minors are basically Engvall type players, Avs and Tampa did those deals because they lacked a youngish bottom 6 player who's solid defensively and on the PK. Vegas has Roy, Cotter, Kolesar, Howden in the NHL and guys like Demek, Sapovaliv, Brabanec and Edstrom in the minors who project to be future bottom 6 pieces.
