Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Blackwood, Mackenzie
Additional Details:
Both aren't playing great. Mirtle was saying that one thing teams are interested in is trading a bad goalie with less money but term for Samsonov. This seems like a great example. San Jose gets a goalie who was really solid last year for a guy they got for free and if it doesn't work they can just let him walk this summer. Also gets them out from under Blackwood next year.

For Toronto it's just taking a risk on someone new. If he can just get to being a .905 goalie and play 40 games its good enough. Woll is signed through next year so you can afford the bad year on Samsonov.
2.
TOR
  1. Johnson, Erik ($1,250,000 retained)
  2. Stillman, Riley
Additional Details:
This might seem like a weird trade but it makes loads of sense.

Johnson/Clifton has been a bottom 5 D pairing in the league by xG%. Clifton plays better up the lineup thank Johnson which indicates that Johnson is at fault.

Klingberg is slightly better at 5v5 (surprisingly) but more important Buffalo has an 11.6% PP. So he can jump in there and actually help Dahlin/Power develop on the PP since they've never actually played with a PP specialist.

Buffalo has plenty of cap space so they are taking cap here but they are actually saving money.

Klingberg's base salary is $2M
Johnson's base salary is $2M
Stillman (in AHL)'s base salary is $1.35M

So Buffalo need to pay $2M (Klingberg) + $770k (retained)
Toronto pays $1.23M (Johnson) + $1.35M (Stillman)

So Buffalo is saving $500k in real money and taking on just under $2M in salary cap (assuming Stillman stays buried cause he counts against the cap).

$500k seems negligible but we all know it matters to Buffalo and could actually be additional budget they are allowed to spend at the deadline.
3.
TOR
  1. Bouchard, Evan
  2. Brown, Connor
Additional Details:
If Edmonton is looking for a change this makes sense.

If brown plays a 10th game it counts for $3.25M towards the cap next year. So Toronto is essentially just getting him to bury him.

Bouchard is a good young player in my eyes. I know he's got loads of hate but I think he fills the role Klingberg was supposed to fill but better. (Yes you have to live with the bad to get the good)

Edmonton is supposed to be really high on McMann so they get him. Jones could be a solution or stop game in net. He's cleared waivers so he is risk free for them and can be sent down.

Kampf can help them defensively in the bottom 6.

Minten can be their longterm solution at 3C if they see McLeod as a LW in the top 6 and prefer RNH on the wing as well (especially as he ages). Or he can be a trade chip at the deadline.

The 1st is an asset if they decide to throw in the towel or a trade chip if they can recover.

I think this strategy of taking a few players who could work around the edges and support the big guns that you know can win is going to be a winning one for Edmonton.

Add McMann/Kampf/Jones to their lineup and remove Bouchard/Brown. You could get a more defensive bottom 6 with more physicality, some league average goaltending and less turnovers on D. The PP takes a hit but if you start winning some 5v5 minutes this could turn around quickly for Edmonton.

Klingberg's PP numbers aren't good either and its also a moot point because the only way he'd play on the PP is if they ran 2 d-men or didn't use one of their multi million dollar first overall picks on the PP, which no, they won't do that.

your cap logic behind the deal makes sense to me but it implies that EJ was signed for performance when in reality thats less likely to be the case. Guy is clearly in the role of token old dude on very young team who has stanley cup winning experience.

The franchise has worked hard to get their rep out of the crapper and so trading this guy less than 20 games after signing him probably undoes most of that good will theyve earned.

Sabres decline, Johnson is a big part of our much improved penalty kill, and Klingberg is not a good replacement. An offense first D is not anything the Sabres need.

The Leafs want cap space and there's only a few teams with any to speak of, and none are interested in helping. So as long as we are willing to accept an offensive defenseman that we don't need, at the expense of some space...

From what numerous insiders are saying they don't value Bouchard as high as they should. If I was Edmonton I wouldn't do this trade but if it's put before Holland I wouldn't be surprised if he took it.

Idk if the leafs would trade Minten unless it's for a real good young d-man. Myself i wouldn't trade Minten at all, he is the future 3C that checks all the boxes. I think next season Minten gets a position in the lineup. Minten-Domi-Robertson next year could be a great 3rd line

This actually makes loads of sense for the Sabres.

1. They save real money
2. Even if Klingberg plays PP2 his knowledge and the way he reads the PP is undisputedly among the best D in the last decade. Passing that onto Dahlin/Power would be insanely valuable.
3. Klingberg had 5 points in 4 games on PP1 and since then has been PP2 as punishment for his 5v5 play. Just look up his analytics they are off the charts good on the PP.
4. Johnson's analytics are literally the worst in the league at 5v5 for any D. Given he is a defensive D that is a major issue. Klingberg's metrics so far this season are better Defensively (excluding all offensive metrics) tha. Johnson's at 5v5.

I think @Kyle_Okposo_Lover is right. You add a 3rd or 4th and Buffalo is laughing. They just took an analytical nightmare and buried D and traded them in a move that saves them real money and nets them a pick with a likely net zero impact on the actual roster (when you factor in their minutes and impacts).

Adding an offensive defenseman is not going to fix Buffalo’s PowerPlay issues. Thinking that’s what they need is absolutely asinine right now. I think their biggest problem is a lack of size among the forwards. They are physically being pushed around by bigger teams, like Philly in Minnesota, even though they beat Minnesota last night. All of their physicality can be summed up with Greenway Girgensons, Jost, and Okposo, and that is simply not enough. Especially if Alex Tuch is out of the lineup for more than a game or two it is felt throughout the lineup. Arguably all of those players, except for Greenway and Tuch could be gone next season.

Buffalo doesn’t really have any exceptionally physical wingers in the pipeline right now, but they are loaded with small speed and skill. Moving forward with that they will be pushed around and beaten up even more if they don’t do something about it. Adding Greenway was a step in the right direction, but you need more.

This is off the charts? They're not taking Power off of PP2 to make room for klingberg after giving him over 8 mil. And I agree EJ is terrible but as I pointed out he clearly wasn't signed for his abilities. He's the token old dude, and theyre not trading him <20 games after signing him

Also Klingberg's rapm chart is literally worse than EJ's defensively so idk what you're on about lol. I get that as a leafs fan this would be a huge win (2 birds one stone) but it's not happening.
