Can you elaborate on this trade? I personally don’t see how it’s fair but maybe I do not see it. Thanks

wouldn't it be cheaper for EDM to buy him out ?

They can't buy him out before next summer: they need a fix now. That said, retention is too high. But at (e.g.) 25% retention, it would be (i) immediate, and (ii) a lesser cap hit (for less time) than buying him out. That said, RNH + a first to get rid of 75% of Campbell's hit and buying Allen seems a bit steep. As I Montreal fan, I'd do it and use Campbell as a backup in the AHL wink

The reason the retention is at 50% is for the cap to work.

I'd also place Jack straight in AHL, and personally, I might even accept this if Edmonton didn't add a 1st, but maybe a second, but taking Jack's brutal contract off their hands needs to result in some draft capital coming out way.

Edmonton need help on Defense and Goalie. They do not need RNH as they really are an offensive juggernaut, plus if they want to keep McDavid, they need to really focus on winning now.

With this trade, they get a lot of defensive size and help with Savard, which will immediately help if you can pair him with Buchard, and then Allen is a really good goalie still, and has won a Stanley Cup.

Finally, EDM need some major help as they are in a really tough spot and so it might help them to make a big splash, and this would show that they still believe they can do something this year.

The cap works even better for the Oilers if they retain less... Montreal is swimming in LTIR money.

Sure it does. But this is Montreal taking a massive, horrible, contract off of Edmonton's hands.

Oh, I just realized that Savard was also in the trade. Don't know how I missed that. I must have gone over this trade much too fast. Then yes, RNH and a first are not that steep of a price, and maybe a larger retention is justified. Not sure the Holland would keep half the contract on the book though. This is much worst than waiting and buying him out this summer, especially considering that they are much more in a win-now spirits than the Habs.

While Allen was in discussion to be the goaltender send to oiler in an exchange, Savard is the rock, the leader in the room. He won't be trade, is value is so much more with Montreal and helping the young man then is actual trade value could bring.

Montreal already make Matheson play to much, removing Savard from the team will push Matheson to much stress to be the only veteran on the blue line.

Adding another second line center could help move Monahan from the center #2 spot and to send him with Caufield / Suzuki duo. But I don't think removing and actual top 6 player to Edmonton help them to return be competitive.

Trading asset like Bourgault, Holloway or even they're first round pick would be ideal.

Habs have an over crowded D room. I don't think Savard is that vital to the growth of the young guys.

On the left side sure there alot of candidates to play. On the right side there not alot of them. There only Savard, Barron, kovacevic, Lidstrom that are natural RD and arber Xhekaj would could play RD. On this lot Savard is the only nhl experience player. Other are young player with not alot of experience or 7d
