Marner

Description
Not sure that Marner would be willing to waive but the idea of playing with Bedard for the next 9 years could be very tempting. Chicago would be smart to acquire someone like Marner, who is an elite playmaker, to play with Bedard.

The value of the trade can be adjusted. Chicago has plenty of interesting assets Toronto could be interested in. Wouldn't be opposed to adding Murphy or Soderblom.

Realistically, Marner would definitely cost you like 2 1sts, + some good young players, the Leafs are getting quantity there but not the quality you'd want back when moving a Marner

Do you think adding Chicago's top 10 protected 1st for 2025 would get it done? Or maybe Tampa's 1st?

Chicago passes. Why would they do that with so many free agents hitting the market in the two years when Chicago is ready to compete? Nylander, LD, Reinhardt, etc. No reason to pay what it will take for Marner.

There's no guarantee that Chicago would get any of them on the open market and Marner is a better passer than all of them anyways.

So instead you think Chicago should give up a couple 1st rounders plus because that's what it will take? No way, Chicago is rebuilding, you don't do that by trading away young assets and valuable draft capital. Draft, develop and then fill gaps through free agency.

Bedard doesn't need marner; he's that good and would make Reinhardt or Nylander look like generation talents. However, just like with Patrick Kane and Toews, and unlike the Leafs unsuccessful model, you don't need to play stars together to be successful with top loading a line or two. You can put a star on a line and surround him by above average players and let that star elevate their game. Much more balanced approach.

Draft, develop, and fill gaps with free agency...that's how you rebuild.

This is a pretty awful trade for the Leafs. All the picks coming back will be late (and if they aren't then Toronto keeps them anyways seeing as though the Toronto picks are protected), and the prospects are inconsequential. We arent going to trade our second best player period, let alone for table scraps.

If Marner would waive I would accept Murphy, Athanasiou and a 1st.
Marner is the one piece we should have moved before his NMC kicked in.
Watch after every time he feels he is touched he turns to the refs and complains.
Does anyone ever wonder why refs do NOT call stuff for TML?
The entire league has caught onto his carrying the puck into the zone they load the side up and he turns it over 85% of the time.

Honestly, even if Marner were willing to waive, there is no need for CHI to consider trading for him. If they are really interested they can just wait a year and approach him in free agency. Either way, there are plenty of free agents coming up over the next handful of years, plenty of veterans we can bring in on short term deals to get us over the salary floor, and plenty of prospects and draft eligibles to consider being important pieces for the Blackhawks in the future.
