With how Nylander is playing right now, why would the Leafs ask for anything less than a Tkachuk-comparable trade?

I didn't say that they would trade Nylander if they were contending. I'm talking about a situation where they linger around the bubble.

What a champ 😂! The leafs have a better record - and are the better team imo - than the Canes. Truly outstanding work - keep it up 😅

I think that matters a lot less than these boards will ever admit.

Very few competitive teams can take on a $10M forward: this is the same reason why I'm not super worried about Edmonton potentially staring down the barrel of losing McDavid and Draisaitl. Any contending team that wants Nylander at $10M is going to need to move cap to do so. If the move happens in-season, the receiving team is eligible to discuss an extension.

There's only so much a team is willing to give up for what could end up being 5 months of Nylander. Even with an RFA you generally want an extension in place so you don't end up with the Cat situation. But the leafs will NEVER let another team even begin negotiations with Nylander until the trade is completed. It'd be a terrible idea. So his value is capped. This is why superstar UFA's rarely get traded at all, because the selling team will never get fair value that works for them, while still being low enough for the acquiring team to accept the risk that it is a pure rental

Leafs don’t have a better cap structure but go on

At least the league looks the other way with “injuries” for players who underperform

Not surprising, you misunderstood what I wrote - almost like you just wanted to get shot in at Leafs #rentfree. The op wrote that Canes have a better cap structure as if it were a viable reason for Leafs to lose a trade. I was repeating his statement and emphasizing it’s ludicrousness 👍
