I think what other Toronto fans struggle to grasp is that GM's love to salivate over big and physical defenseman.
My friend Kinger seems to be convinced a 3rd is all it'll take to acquire Zadorov, when it'll simply take more than that.
He might cost a 2nd+a prospect but I don't see getting any more, as he's the lesser of the 3 CGY defenders (they all bring different things but they are all defensemen who have some size to them) and there are only so many 1sts to go around. The Flames are supposedly looking for someone who can play in the lineup, so it's going to be someone who has some NHL experience or someone destroying the AHL is waiting for their chance from the Leafs it's guys like Holmberg, Steeves, maybe McMann, Abruzzese if he's acquired along with Tanev. I also don't think he's more valuable than McCabe who would have cost a 2nd+prospect without the multi-year 50% retention (retention on Zadorov would only cost a 4th/5th).
If Zadorov had term on his deal then maybe you would see an overpay for him just off his size, but don't be surprised if he does fetch only a 3rd+prospect (overall value being a 3rd+4th or two 3rds). He's more than likely to get too much money in FA than to get a ton of assets as a rental.

I saw my fanbase giving Jarnkrok away for free all summer, now he's suddenly worth a 2nd+. Why I'm not really active on here anymore
People are going to value players differently but also you got to consider the situation in which they were moving the guy. A lot of people were moving Jarnkrok in the offseason for cap space, so he definitely wouldn't have gotten max value (whatever they considered that to be). In the case of Zadorov, if the Leafs are trying to acquire him well before the deadline along with Tanev, then they are probably looking at having to pay more for one if not both guys.
