He is now allowed to sign and it hasn't happened yet. Here is a new poll for this question.

In order to consider the value of resigning in New York, you have to consider the other reasonable fits for Tavares to go to instead.

Montreal
Positives: Clear need for a #1 center, likely ability to pay 12+ million for it, superstar goalie, top notch wing talent.
Negatives: No prospect depth whatsoever, inconsistent management, Canadian market pressure

San Jose
Positives: Could use a #1 center, great living situation, experienced roster, plenty of cap space
Negatives: Mediocre prospect depth, aging roster

New York Rangers
Positives: New York market, solid young forwards, solid, moderately young defense corps
Negatives: Aging legendary goaltender, may have to carry the offense, could have not enough cap space, may not need a #1 center

New Jersey Devils
Positives: New York market (albeit slightly less so), team with upcoming forward talent, top-notch goaltending and winger, plenty of cap space
Negatives: Weak defense without many coming prospects, may not need a #1 center

Carolina
Positives: Definite need for a #1 center, stacked prospect pool, young at all positions, plenty of cap space
Negatives: Weak hockey market, inconsistent goaltending

Vegas, Vancouver, Arizona - Unlikely, but an opportunity to lead the turnaround in the making

Potentials - Florida, St. Louis, Buffalo

I think you can say at least two of those situations are better than New York Islanders, and he probably leaves for greener pastures.

The closer it gets to the day when JT can walk out the door, the harder it will be for him to stay with that gong show of a team.
The islanders really have to prove to him that they are worth resigning with. They got Eberle to play with him and they tried to get Duchene as well--that goes a long way as far as goodwill showing. They are making attempts but I don't know if JT wants to stay if they are going to continue to play in the excuse for an arena and the ownership is questionable meaning they could uproot the team. I would not be shocked to see them move out of New York. Maybe Barzal and Ho-Sang will show him that there is a future for the team. I think convincing JT to stay comes in three stages. One this offseason, which they are doing a good job appeasing him with Eberle. They got a lot for Hamonic which is great for their asset management. Two: the trade deadline if they are in a playoff spot they have to push using their pick or CGYs pick to get the big fish. If they aren't in a playoff spot JT is not resigning. Three: the playoffs they have to go at least to round two. It all comes down to this season, which means JT is going to play out of his mind to have the Brinks trucks roll up to his house.
If he does go to free agency what does that contract start with 8 or 9? I do like what tadhockey said Carolina makes sense. Montreal makes a lot of sense too, however...they're another team that I look at them and they have a lot of questions from top to bottom why would he leave one organization with a lot of question marks to go to another one with maybe bigger question marks that is a topic for another thread though.
I think the contestants in the Tavares sweepstakes's are
Boston they do have some decisions to make but if they want to win very quickly they can move some pieces and they have some decent prospects to fill the cheap wingers like Pittsburgh did.
Carolina basically they are a mishmash of former blackhawks and some really good homegrown talent. Staal and Tavares down the middle is good but their winger depth is something I am not familiar with. They have a deep pool of prospects, at least that's what I'm told, and also really seem like they are going to make a push this year for a wild card spot.
Calgary which would just be nasty to have a power play of Johnny Hockey Tavares Monahan Hamilton and who cares as your number 1 unit they do have some questions in their line up, also with the west falling off the odds of making the playoffs are getting better the problem you have the oilers to deal with in division and are going to have to play them in at least round two of the playoffs. They also have the situation with wanting a new arena and the luncheon meeting there is another opportunity where a team could move.
Ny Islanders resigning is probably they most likely option as we saw with Stamkos who had his hand on the door knob to free agency. But they have to prove themselves to Tavares.
Winnipeg they have a great prospect pool and the idea of Tavares fishing the puck over to Laine sort of scares me. Honestly I don't have a good reason why they wouldn't be in besides their questionable goaltending...which can be fixed with one good move.
If he does make it to free agency someone is going to move heaven and earth for the cap space to snag him up.
I didn't include Arizona and Vegas (which he would really help both franchises and if I'm being fair Arizona does meet the same standards I set for other teams in terms of a good prospect pool) is I don't know how much actual dollars they are able to commit. The dollars and cents are more important there. They are not like the leafs and can afford to have a Robidas Island.
Personally, I want him to leave and just create the chaos that Stamkos did except go through with it and sign with someone else. It's going to be quite a stir, which is also what I was hoping would happen with Price, but Montreal took care of that real quick before any nonsense could happen. I don't know if resigns. I think it's 50/50 right now and the season with dictate where the needle shifts.
