Calgary only takes Laine as a project and power play specialist because there's enough retention to get his AAV well under 6 million. Calgary receiving a decent center / center prospect and a 2024 1st as the main pieces in the return is absolutely crucial if Columbus wants Lindholm regardless of what the 3rd asset is.

Edit: It goes without saying but just for those special people who can't see the obvious Lindholm extends with Columbus. Columbus has more than enough cap space to extend Lindholm and with the cap going up this summer pick up another pretty good player too which they'll need to help Lindholm carry little johnny again.

It's fair value, but I can't see CLB taking retention. Even without the retention, it's a worthwhile gamble for CAL, as Sillinger and the first are both excellent pieces. With CLB, CAL isn't dealing from a position of strength.

Calgary is dealing from a position of strength Columbus needs a 1st line center really badly right now while Calgary is no rush to trade Lindholm if they even do trade him at all. Sure they're listening to offers but it'll take a good offer to get him especially so far from the trade deadline. I agree Columbus could balk at that much retention on Laine but without that much Calgary won't be taking him off their hands. There's no way Lindholm is going to be able carry both little johnny AND Laine at the same time time, he needs a pretty good player to help him carry just one of those two.

CLB has $20M to sign 8 players next year. If Lindholm takes up $8-9 M of that and they keep $3M for Laine the next two years, It doesn't leave them room to sign all their pending RFA's or address other needs. If they're giving up a high first and Sillinger, there's no way they retain. They'd rather wait to see if they can sign him in the offseason when there are more options.

Lindholm will almost certainly be extended before then whether it's with Calgary or another team. He won't be making it to UFA.

Decent trade, I think the retention could be removed, but regardless works for both teams involved.

My feeling is he's traded for a haul to a contender, and then hits free agency in the summer cause the team aquiring him can't afford his price tag. He's the perfect candidate for that scenario..........a small cap hit that most can afford, but contract expectations that also most can't afford

If he goes to a true top contender then it'd be a lesser haul than I proposed here but it's also very likely a wannabe contender (especially one needs a 1st line center as badly as Columbus does) can afford to trade more for him and pay him more will acquire him with an extension. Or it could be a good young near / just started contending team with plenty of cheap good young players, prospects and drafts picks that believes a player like Lindholm is exactly what they need to be a top contender.

I think that Lindy will go to CBJ or Detroit if it happens way before TDL and in this scenario he will be extended immediately. The other scenario is Bruins, Canes or Avs in TDL. Out of these three Bruins are the only one who will extend him because next summer they have money. But I also see him trying free agency, we don't know where he wants to play for the rest of his career. If he has a preference of 2-3 teams he'll try FA.

As others have said without retention this might work because CBJ has so many upcoming RFA's and Laine might shine in Calgary.

Fair value??? Columbus' 1st is going to be up near the very top of the lottery again. That should be about enough for Lindholm, man.

If they pick him up now, I think there's a good chance it's no longer a lottery, or at the very least a low percentage one. CLB is starting to pick it up. Werenski is finally back healthy, and the kids ae showing growth.

This is a better return than Eichel got. Would have to think there would need to be protection on that first rounder.
