Habs accept even tho Robertson isnt what we are looking for.

Would prefer a rhd or center.

Am I missing something or why is Monahan worth a 1st and a decent prospect?

Possible, but Depth matters, too.

Given the uncertainty of Chytil and Kakko, probably still better to have him as insurance.

Sorry, the offer is good but I think the Habs would be more inclined to get a higher valued prospect back and a lower pick than a 1st and good LHD prospect. Someone like Cuylle, Othmann or Kakko along with a pick in the 2nd-5th range depending on which player is coming back, in no way am I saying NY should offer that, just laying out what Montreal is more likely to be looking for

He's playing well on a bad team. Can play multiple spots. The 1st will be a late Pick (hopefully). The tight Cap will make it a Sellers Market, where low Cost/high reward players like Monahan will be deeply sought.

Adding Robertson as a sweetener (and for the slight retention) could be a little much, but may also help sway the deal for them.

The Rangers (and most other contenders) can't financially afford any big Contract players (i.e practically any big name from Calgary). The Monahans, DuClair's and Tommy Novak's of the world are who we can focus on. And that, crazy or not, will make them pricier than normal.

No one will give up their Top Prospect for Monahan. If not for the Cap Crunch on all the contenders, you probably wouldn't get the 1st in any other year.

The Habs will already get more than his actual worth, because of this. But common sense and restraint will prevail, at some point.

That's fair and I did say I wasn't saying the Rags should do it but the Habs aren't likely taking back another LHD prospect either, so like I said they would be more interested in a top forward prospect and a lower pick if they had their choice, I guess the other option would just be for a 1st + 3rd and no prospects involved. Common sense should be applied to their side of the deal as well, we already have Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Hutson and Struble as good young D and with Matheson signed for 2 more years after this one at least 2 of them will be traded or sent to Laval next year

I mean I guess. He's been playing alright sure. I just don't see many teams trading a 1st for a middle 6 scorer who is often injured as of late.

I think the rangers learned from last year about giving up firsts for washed up players

The injury issue really only applies if you're thinking of keeping him long term. He's healthy and showing no signs of injury.

A good comparable for rental trade return that's similar is the Stastny STL-WIN trade in 2018. Stastny at the time was 31, Monahan is 29. Stastny had 40pts by the time he was traded, Monahan is currently on pace for the same production. Stastny's cap hit (after retention) was $3.5mil aav, Monahan is $2mil aav (or less if MTL retains). Both players are solid 2-way centers.
Stastny got STL essentially a 1st + 4th.

That was also an in division trade. I mean realistically that's not a bad comp but that was also 5 years ago which realistically may help your case given the flat cap prior to that.

I just see Monahan and I see the guys last year who had gotten traded for a 2nd and that seems more on pace with what I could see being pretty reasonable: Eller, Domi

1st and 3rd is palatable. I would consider that

Eller was 33 last year and strictly considered a defensive center now. Domi is the complete opposite lol has flashes of elite offensive talent and a complete defensive liability.

Monahan is much more well-rounded, and more than likely will be sought after by contending teams. But a 2nd rd pick is still a possibility if Monahan's play dips (and if Marty St-Louis keeps playing him with Anderson....he will most certainly dip in production...)
