Description
If we are in this spot near the TDL, I think we would be better off selling and trying to get our top 10 protected pick back. The Stamkos trade is really unlikely because I doubt he waives but if he did then selling him would help the tank and the future. I also don't think JBB is going to be willing to put up the cash necessary in the offseason to sign him and we will lose him for free like Killorn and Palat. I put the prospects in the lineup to get them some experience and help the tank. If we are winning too many games we could make Johansson a tandem with Vasy and put ABB on the top line, etc.

I dont think they will be worse next season, a lot of the prospects will be seeing ice time next season on their value ELC's and vasy will be there the entire season. Also most of the lightnings problems have been structural issues so if jeff blashill (the defensive assistant coach) gets fired then they will be much better. The cap is also going up and by not resigning stamkos they will be able to make a splash in the FA pool.

The history of the NHL shows that teams need elite players to win, and that those players - drafted at the top of drafts - are unavailable in FA. Almost universally, teams have to get real bad to draft those elite players. And they don't get a roster full of them, either. The NHL is the ultimate team sport, IMO - it takes a LOT of great players to win the Cup. You need LOTS of terrific players to win and stay competitive. And even then, the cap and age take their toll. I think TBL will shortly find out what Chicago did - the ride down is inevitable and very painful. Maybe TBL will be the exception to the rule, but I doubt it.

Cheers

tampas problem isnt a lack of elite players, there problem is lack of defensive depth and coaching issues

We'll agree to disagree... The Hawks had a ton of elite players immediately following their Cup years, too, but time and all those extra games playing into June during their playoff runs took their toll on even those players' bodies. The Hawks had a great run with many LONG seasons; so have the Lightning.

Maybe you're right; reasonable minds can disagree. If TBL immediately goes on another run, though, they'll run contrary to the experience of virtually every other team that won multiple cups. Good luck!
