Aye, he took less money than he could've gotten. Good for him and the Oilers.

86 million of the 100 million is signing bonus...that means he's making less than an average of 2 million per year in actual salary. Yeesh.

Started at 18, therefore RFA until 25
Now Free Agent at 29
This contract was all about defending against an offer-sheet.

If you had to pick 2 bad contracts by Chiarelli, they are the ones with No Movement Clauses.
Lucic, at age 28 signed for 7 years at $6 million
Russell, at age 30 signed for 4 years at $4 million

Both are replaceable by in-house talent at much lower salaries, and no limits on trades

It's really surprising to go from signing Russell to this dilemma by McD + Drai in such a short span of time.
I guess Chiarelli had a Draisatl trade clearly in mind

The Oilers are fine for next season
2018-19 has a lot important of RFAs and UFAs to sort through
2019-20 Cam Talbot is a UFA and the team without him is unthinkable right now

These are the possibilities I see:
- Draisatl gets $8-10 million.
+ ahead of being traded in the next year (or RNH and more)
+ after being traded this summer
+ by offer-sheet, EDM elects not to match and takes draft pick compensation

- Draisatl takes a lower number to become UFA asap in 4 seasons

Anyone know why the team or McDavid might prefer to front-load payment?
I wonder what the insurance policy on McDavid is now

that's smart. Means he gets paid in a lockout and gets paid if he's bought out which wouldn't happen.

Chances are the team is fine with it because giving him the money now means he was willing to lower the cap hit it would cost the team, and McDavid takes money home if there is a lockout, he gets injured, bought out, etc. He's set and the org knows he'll be happy.

The guy has one decent season never winning anything that matters like a Stanley Cup while not impressing me in the Playoffs... He was less than a point a game so that is a far cry form 30 goals with 100 points... Didn't Doug Weight have 100 points or more on Oilers or some other players? Having a nice fluke season when teams are weaker in prep of the expansion draft don't mean a damn thing in my book. Major Mistake, least the kid was smart enough to leave money on the table as they claim instead of a 13.25M cap hit. This will start badly, this will end badly, much like those orange uniforms the people behind this belong in prison... This will increase the chances of a lockout, NHL is better off extending contract max to 10 years than leaving at 8 jacking up this contracts. If this was 10 years 100M that would be a lot easier to manage if he fails. Either way the rule I suggested about not allowing a contract to exceed the current salary cap would save the NHL from a lockout while keeping a way to control deals based on the cap. So if the Cap hit at time of contract signing is 77M, then a team could give 7 years 11M cap hit to a free agent... If the team gets them to stay they could give 77M over 8 years for a cap hit of 9.625M, I know it might not seem logical to many... My accounting teacher told me I was throwing away an A so I'll take my numbers over the Dean Lombardi way of over paying bums like Kopitar. Edmonton took a big step today to make sure they wont return the Post Season while increasing the chances for another lockout. Not having a contract max value tied to the actual cap can only result in exceeding that, people have no problem spending on a credit card when they don't have to pay the bill since the fans will be on the hook. I think hockey fans should create a union that forces the NHL to keep ticket prices lower or what is decided is a fair amt of money to pay by the fans who allow these children to live rich lives without deserving it. IN the real world insurance companies do all they can to cheat out of money or even getting treatment. In this world kids who don't know anything about life are being paid insane amts of money for playing a game lacking the skill to earn that money in any other way honestly or otherwise wink.

McDavid is a proven franchise player and is quite possibly the best player in the NHL right now. He's more than worth this kind of contract.

Seems pretty hefty for a dude that's played a season and a half. But what are they going to do, say no? Peter Chiarelli's negotiating strategy was probably to plead on hands and knees to get him down even to this number.

Getting McDavid down to 12.5 million from 13.5 million allows them to resign Draisaitl for 9 million which he's asking for instead of 7-8 million which Chiarelli wants (According to rumors).

You misinterpret stats that are from 20 years ago as equivalent to today's game. Maximum player contract is tied to the NHL salary cap. No player contract can exceed 20% of the salary cap per season.

Anyone who argues with this AAV should go back and take a look at what Crosby's was when he signed compared to the cap. Larger percentage of cap ceiling when Crosby signed. McDavid is and will be everything Crosby is barring major injury.

How is there so little comment's on this signing? I thought he would be at like 20 pages in the first week. Not still on the 1st page 4 years later

This was from 2017. The userbase was probably like a fourth of what it is now. If it was signed today, then yes, we might be at page 20.

Yeah, the site started around 2015 I think and it probably wasn't too big until like 2018 or 2019

Haha I know. Cuz the Matthews signing just happened I was like “hmmmmm wonder what the comment section for McDavids contract is like. Maybe it’s like 13 pages or whatver” and I go and look and it’s only the first page. Truly amazing. Also want to know who voted no for his contract.

Thank you for pulling this out of the woodwork. It is a funny comparison in light of Matthews' signing.

Apparently 18 people need to have their heads examined.
