That Hanifin deal is nuts - he's good, but not that good. All you have to do is look back to last year's deadline to see a better comp, in my opinion - Dmitry Orlov from the Caps to the Bruins. The Caps took back Craig Smith's $3.1M, got a 1st in that year's draft, plus a future 2nd and a 3rd. Boston paid an extra 5th to Minnesota for extra retention, so they got Orlov at $1.275M -and- also brought in a solid bottom-6 player in Garnet Hathaway.

Hanifin might be a little better than Orlov, but I'd argue the higher cap hit negates some of that. This deal would be a huge overpay.

They've literally won 7 out of their last 10 games despite the fact that they're cobbling together a d-corps every night half made up of AHL call-ups and guys they more or less picked off the trash heap. I totally agree that Hanifin will make the team better, but I think the fact that they're having success with much worse players will keep the desperation down.

And again - Hanifin vs Orlov in a vacuum is probably advantage Hanifin, but Orlov only cost $1.275M for Boston and came with Garnet Hathaway - this ask here is just completely out of proportion with recent history.
