If Gibson doesn't want to play for a cup contender, I have doubts about his competitive nature. And if that's the case the Leafs wouldn't want him. Not wanting to play for a certain team, or in a country that would make him king if he helped bring a cup is just ignorant and stupid.

Lots of competitive players who want a cup don't want to play in Canada, most recently Tkachuk. It's not all that uncommon.
