Why would Detroit make this trade?

I would say this all depends on how MTL feels about Poulin’s future and whether they can help him turn it around. If they feel they can then I would say this is a decent offer, well done.

Take out Berggren and it's alot closer for Detroit.

Detroit trade makes no sense for them. Getting rid of a young player in a prospect position they need for a 3rd and two more years of a 13th forward?

If that's all DET wants, and that's all we could get for Monahan, we would skip the PIT part altogether and send Monahan to DET for Berggren 1 for 1. Based on your valuation above, DET would get more that way and MTL would get something more interesting than a 2nd round pick.

Now this isn't my ACGM but I think Monahan being a UFA at the end of the season and Berggren having 4 seasons left before he becomes a UFA probably plays into the value for both players.

Personally I wouldn't want Monahan or Acciari for Berggren based on age alone. Even if Detroit makes the playoffs I don't see Yzerman buying at the TDL

Fair enough, not sure what value you (or Yzerman) puts on Berggren. Only went off the trades above. Read a few articles lately (not that it's anything concrete) where we're apparently interested in Berggren. What kind of piece/pieces would you be looking for?
