Because Chris Tanev won't be that cheap to acquire. It'll take a 1st +

Based on what?

(I was comparing the two trades above).

I was actually just thinking of something similar recently. But I had TOR's 2026 1st instead of the 2024 1st, no 2nd going to TOR, 50% retention on Murphy, Donato going to TOR, and CHI taking back Reaves and Samsonov instead of Jarnkrok. So, TOR would be getting even more value than the 2024 2nd. Interesting... Maybe I was going overboard on giving TOR sweeteners, but CHI has a lot longer way to go than some CHI fans seem to think. So, adding more 1st round picks is pretty valuable to our rebuild, IMO. I never hit publish, though. I'd rather critique other peoples ACGM's than deal with critiques on my own. haha

Also, you're probably gonna have to pay more for Tanev. Given that he is a pending UFA rental and I personally think he is a bit overrated, I don't think he is gonna get as much as CGY fans want, but I definitely think he will get more than that. Especially with the retention.

Come-on Garak we want to see what you put together! In a fictional Garak world what would he do?

Leafs fans - you're not getting Tanev for scraps and garbage.

Funny, this reminds of the Zadorov chat before he went for scraps

I think Chicago would jump on the chance to unload Murphy ASAP. Getting Liljegren back to fill his spot plus a 1st rounder would be a deal they couldn't pass up. Murphy just seems lost out there. I don't know if it's trying to help bring along younger defensemen this season, but his play has been atrocious. Maybe a change of scenery to a contending team would spark him.

Quite the opposite. He is their best veteran defensive defenseman, he eats tons of minutes, he is a consummate pro, a leader on and off the ice, an RHD, and CHI's longest tenured player. Sure his stat line tells a different story, but he is a good defenseman that they are in no rush to move, and likely wouldn't do it without a very good package coming back. It's not his fault CHI is the worst roster in the league and he has to babysit defensive liabilities every night.

No, he's bad. He's always been bad. It just used to be easier for them to hide his deficiencies on better rosters. Bowman was dumb to acquire him in 2017, and he was dumb to extend him in 2021. He won't be of any use to the organization by the time they're ready to compete. A first rounder for him would be plenty.

No. He isn't bad. Also, that isn't a 1st rounder. That is trading up from the late 2nd to the late 1st. Which isn't nothing, but it isn't enough either.

You guys got quite the debate going on. Lol, but obvi I’m a Murphy fan myself and think he would prosper with a better supporting cast.

Some people just don't get defensive play. They think "if they aren't contributing on offense then they are bad." And it's just wrong. Defensive leaning coaches like Luke Richardson and Kevin Dean wouldn't play him 18 plus minutes a night on the toughest defensive assignments and paired with their rookie dman who is a defensive liability if he was "bad".

I agree. People look too much into these analytics stats. Leafs are looking for a reliable RHD that can play in the top pair. I think he fits the criteria for the Leafs pretty well
