What type of extension do you think he'll get? Short or Long term? Probably over 5 years but less than Cozens or Thompson $7,000,000 AVV
The Sabres need to deal with a pleasent conundrum, how to keep all of the young talent in the system.
15 months ago most Sabre fans were posting Casey trades for a third, a few were trading him for a second some two, but no one valued him at a late first PLUS prospects.
How times have changed!
If Johansson was 21 instead of three months short of his 24th birthday, I could see the Sabres considering the trade to add a RHD to the prospect fold.
Over the past 6 drafts Buffalo has done exceptionally well with their 28 OA and later picks.
2018 Samuelsson 32nd
2019 Johnson 31st
2020 Peterka 34th
2021 Poltapov 33rd
2022 Kulich 28th
2023 Wahlberg 39th
The first three are all in the NHL getting significant ice time.
Only Potapov of the 2021 draft does not appear to have a sure path to the NHL, Buffalo has certainly received excellent value from their later round picks.
If Buffalo thought Kulich could step into the NHL before the end of the season, Casey could be an unfortunate cap casualty as it will be difficult to grant him a $6,000,000 contract.
Today, after only 30 games, management will not be trading their current #1 center.
