Description
Don’t normally look into these types of things too much, but heard on Daily Faceoff today that Zegras’s name has been out there within GM circles for a little while.

Wondering if the Canes see a skilled forward with a sub $6m x 3 years cost control who might be available and want to put their name in the ‘sweepstakes’.

I could see a change of Scenery type trade with Zegras and Necas being the center pieces…

Guessing the Canes need to add here, just not sure how much.

i feel that Necas could sign for close to the same amount of money as Zegras short term so idk if Canes need to do it, if it was a 6 to 8yr deal Zegras it'd be a different story

I do not think Necas will sign a short term contract with the Canes, and I also do not believe the Canes like or prefer bridge deals.

IF I were disposed to trade Trevor, and I'm certainly not, Martin Necas would be one of the few players I'd like to come back. In this instance, I think that Carolina might have to add something, but I'm not about to suggest what because I haven't a clue.

Correct but he’s also close to 3 years younger than Necas. I could have said Canes don’t like short term deals instead of bridge deals.

Necas for Zegras is very intriguing. I’m sure the Canes would love to dump DeAngelo too in such a deal. The Ducks probably want no part of DeAngelo though, but you never know with them just jettisoning a similar D in Dryesdale. DeAngelo is on quite a good contract for what he brings. Probably also flipable for a pick come deadline.

Maybe Necas + DeAngelo + PHI 2024 2nd/B prospect (Rees, Suzuki, Honka, Gunler, Heimosalmi, whatever)

For Zegras + (Henrique 50% or Lubuyskin(sp?))

I suck at valuations

Then the Canes pick up another G and depth D at the deadline and ready for the playoffs.

Dealing Necas for Zegras with some term also saves the Canes the headache of dealing re-signing Necas this summer. Necas is gonna want more than Zegras’ $5.75M

Purely to gain some knowledge I may be overlooking, but why would the Canes be the ones adding in this situation? My baseline thoughts (Necas makes less now, only 2 years apart, Necas more points getting slightly less prime time opportunity to put up points, both can play center or wing, Necas the far better defensive player). Thanks!

Well, I might be suffering from bias; you make some good points.

My main reason for thinking that Zegras is ultimately "worth" more than Necas is that although Necas is a very fine player, Zegras strikes me (and his first two full seasons have done nothing to dispel this) as a kid with almost unlimited upside potential. He could be SoCal's first 100-point scorer. And as Bill Torrey once said about Mike Bossy, You can teach a kid to be responsible defensively, but you can't teach a kid to score 60 goals. And you have to admit that at least a little of Necas' productivity comes from playing on a better team, both offensively and defensively.

Thanks for bringing up some valid counterpoints to my PoV!

ok, all fair points. I have always felt (rightly or wrongly) that some guys get inflated points on bad teams bc they just happen to be amongst the best 5 players on that team, therefore get amplified PP time. There is a fine line tho however that you point out that player with better players can also increase production, which makes hockey (and its players) even more difficult to judge. which one of those guys is each player?!?!?
