Additional Details:
Over the long-term about three-quarters of players leave their team within a couple of years following an arbitration case. About half leave the following year. Those aren’t good odds for Swayman.

But now this quote on news about his All-Star nod

"After dealing with what I did this summer with the arbitration, hearing things that a player should never hear, it feels pretty special to be in this situation."

He does not sound long for Boston.

You really don’t understand how arbitration works

I do understand how it works
(That was a tongue-in-cheek quip)

Correct. They could've signed the exact same deal for 2 years because the party that doesn't elect for arb. gets to select between 1 and 2 years. Or am I wrong in that? I understood is as the term is selected after AAV is set by the arbitrator and doesn't affect the deliberation over the value (which is based on the anchor points of the team and player proposals). They signed 1 year after the term was decided rather than push it to 2 because they wanted to show Swayman that then intended to sign him to big money long-term after the cap crunch of this season was over (the ~5 mil. overages form Bergeron and Krejci specifically, but also the anticipated cap increase and deals like Forbort and Gryz ending to add another 6+). It would've been even more cost effective to sign for 2 since it was a foregone conclusion that if they signed him for that 2nd year that he would greatly outperform a 3.475 aav. Otherwise from what I understand there was no reason not to elect for 2 on Boston's end, which is also what the pundits said at the time

It depends a lot on your age. If it’s your last RFA, only 1-year is an option. But in this type of case, the arbitration judge gives the team the choice of 1-year award or 2-year to the team. When the number is ‘awarded’ the team has only binary choice of go or no go. Not like they could say, “we will do the one-year but not the two-year”.

You may be right but Boston was DEAD up against the cap in the offseason. Every penny was important

Very true. I think both can be accurate, that it helped Boston to sign a 1 year deal cap wise, and that they wanted to show Swayman that their intention was to transition to him being the starter as soon as possible in the context of their cap constraints
