    Minnesota ISN'T retaining.

Not for a pick, not for anything.

They DO NOT have the cap space.

    My fault!

I just remembered like two years ago when they helped like 2-3 different teams retain on TDL deals and thought Guerin might still be running that program lmao

Mmm... I suppose it's possible, but the Blues have limited cap and other moves to make. Seems pretty unlikely they'd have the cap for this.

Makes sense, I was just thinking of a younger team with a bit of cap space that's out of the playoff race but not quite rebuilding where retention spots are going to be a huge asset for them (Hawks, Sharks, Ducks)

I was thinking of teams like the Yotes, Wild, Kraken (though they're on a heater right now) and Predators

The Blues have little cap space, and are not out of the playoff race. And if they do sell at the TDL, they have their own UFAs who may require retention.

As for Minnesota, they have like 15M of dead cap through next season. They're the last team to do this.

That was last year. And it was former AGM Chris O'hearn who namely helped on both the Ryan O'Reilly and the Dmitri Orlov trades. Not Guerin himself. He just signed off on them. They had around an extra $4M in capspace to facilitate those retention for draft capital which were subsequently used to bring in Guerin's own TDL acquisitions.

That said. Minnesota is currently playing with $15M in deadcap, $25M in LTIR, for a fielded roster around the $50M mark. There's been zero chance to accrue capspace this year for the TDL, unlike last year.

I say this as a CBJ fan: that's too much for Elvis. If that were on the table, I think he could have started against Detroit a few days ago.

Elvis is a 1B, league-average-results goaltender on an expensive (but not prohibitive) deal. I think his market value is around mid-round pick (3rd or 4th) if you take the whole deal. Dumping Campbell is probably short of a 1st, but it's in that range. Ros half-retained is probably a 2nd given he's a streaky scorer who doesn't offer much else (can play on the PK, but with mixed results).

You could remove Bourgault and Columbus says yes without hesitation. You could make it work with Campbell, the 2024 1st, the 2024 2nd, and a 2025 3rd.
