CBJ continues the retool

Created by: Dodominator
Team: 2023-24 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2024
Published: Jan. 16, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Blue Jackets are not in the part of the rebuild where they need to trade everybody anymore, but continue their way up by picking up some futures in exchange for players who might be on their way out anyways.
Merzlikins requested a trade and for the Oilers he is a clear upgrade in exchange for Campbell. Columbus can take on the contract and check if they can keep him going or buy him out for some big sweeteners. Danforth is a nice addition for the Oilers, cheap and hard working bottom six forward who can generate some scoring with the right linemates.
Bean can get a fresh start. The potential might be there, but with the top defenseman being signed long term and some more talented defenseman (Jiricek, Boqvist) needing ice time to prove themselves, there probably is no spot for him in the lineup moving forward. He would immediately be one of the Sharks better defenseman and could use the opportunity there (possible powerplay ice time too) to show his value in free agency to other teams.
Roslovic is from Columbus, but i am not sure what might be his role going forward either. If he wants to stay there as a local player its great, but if not, you can flip him for a nice pick at the deadline. Middle six forward, plays center and winger and can give you between 40 and 50 points. Teams like Colorado or Boston looking for forward depth will probably be interested.
I thought about moving Provorov too, but with the Werenski injury he is currently the number 1 LD and is looking solid. With one more year on his deal, Columbus can go into next season with him and evaluate, if he will be a part of the core going forward or if they can get a good return for his allready retained contract.
The spots in the lineup created through long term injuries (Werenski, Laine, Jenner) can be used to test young players like Holloway or Brober, who need a new chance at the NHL level.

I totaly agree, but I think thats just the price you would have to pay if you want to move Campbell and get a solid goalie in return.
I dont think any team even considers a move just to take one Campbell alone for less then at least a first and a 3rd/4th round pick. They brought themselves in the position to be in need for a terrible trade if they want to make this move at goalie and the other teams know that.

Avs need depth, but their cupboard of picks is pretty bare and by 2026 they need to think of replenishing through the draft. Spending the 2026 2nd on a guy who is likely a $3M rental for the B6 is not ideal.

EDM will just buyout Campbell in the offseason. Find another team for Merzlikins.

I understand but as SupremeBone stated, Edmonton will fix their own mistake for 1.5 Mill in the offseason instead of spending assets. Elvis is interior to Skinner and Skinner is half the cost.
