LA can't afford jake Allen at full value, They can barely afford him at 50% retained. And no backup is getting a 2nd round pick in return.

The goalie market is extremely high right now. Don’t be shocked to see guys like Allen traded for 2nd round picks.
The need of a position determines the value. Goalies didn’t return a lot in previous years because not many teams were looking to acquire them via trade. But now a there’s probably at least 10 teams in need of a goalie so the market changes.

I think Monahan can at least pass the puck well but its not enough of an upgrade over RyJo to spend a 1st on.

Most teams looking for a goalie are also up against the cap. Jake Allen makes $3,850,000 for one more year. There's a strong possibility of teams taking on James Reimer for $750,000 or Alex Lyon $900,000 for one more year then Jake Allen at full alue.

So if we compare the Dach and Newhook trades to a Zegras like you said that would mean you’d have to combine their value to get Zegras. You take the 2 best seasons of Dach and Newhook you get around 50 points. Zegras has two 65 point seasons.

But you already know that’s not even close to getting Zegras.

Jake Allen is not the goaltender the Kings will be targeting. He's worse than both guys the Kings have already.

Getting off the $4mm salary for Johansen next year is probably the biggest part of that deal. Plus it free up $2mm more cap space to add further rentals to improve depth for the cup run this year.
If the Avs don’t need the cap space, then they keep both, and the draft pick is probably lower, unless there’s another team who steps up to pay more.
It’ll be a straight auction unless some team gets creative like this. Time will tell what the highest picked offered ends up being and from who.

We’ve been playing with basically a fully squad of rookie D for 2 years now. Allen’s stats don’t mean much. He’s a good goalie, and his contract for next year is reasonable.

Easy to get points when you can’t play both sides of the ice, you’re playing on a brutally bad team, you get premium powerplay time, most of the offensive zone opportunities, and the best lines mates.

They’re all from the same draft class. Dach was taken 3rd over all and will probably end up the best of the bunch long term. Downside of Zegras is that now he’s over paid, and he’s only on a short term deal.

Neither has a contract for next year. My guess is that would be the main reason. You can’t compare the stats. Habs are throwing our young D right into the fire and having them learn through experience. If Friedman says Kings are looking for a goalie, he’s not pulling that out of thin air.

Kings probably should have addressed this in the summer rather than spending a bunch of assets and cap on a bottom 6 C.

He doesn't do anything for the Kings this season, and next season the Kings have $22M+ in cap space. They're not looking to solve next season's problem's now.

They're either going to acquire a rental like Kevin Lankinen, or they're going all in on a guy like Saros or Gibson.

$22mm in cap space to sign 11 players. Including two goalies, and signing or replacing Arvidsson, Matt Roy, & Copley. It goes fast.
Who knows, it’s possible this is all happening because Talbot and Rittich are just asking for way too much.
Lankinen is totally unproven.
I also think Gibson could potentially be an interesting fit in a lot of places. Way more expensive though in what it would cost to get him, and it’s a big cap hit.

Jake Allen is proven, but he problem is that he has proven to suck everywhere he has played, not just in Montreal. He's not the answer for next season.

Copley was unproven last season, and the Kings did well with him. Talbot was an inexpensive UFA, and the Kings are doing well with him. Rittich has played 6 NHL games this season. Not sure how he's asking for anything.

Lankinen is a solid 1B goaltender that has played well in a backup role, even on bad teams. You can't say the same about Allen. That's the type of short-term guy the Kings want to solidify goaltending this season.

Every team has a reasonable set aside budget for goaltending. The $5M that Saros makes or the $6.4M that Gibson makes is entirely reasonable for a starting goaltender. We're not talking about Bobrovsky's contract here. This season the Kings had to cheap out on goaltending. Next season, they don't have to.

You do realize that trades don’t usually happen, right?
And you do understand what the point of this website is, right?
You said he’s not being shopped. And that he hasn’t asked for a trade.
Because you haven’t read either of those two things.
As if reading things would even make them a certainty that they be true.
Or their absence thus making either impossible.
You must think that agents and GMs talk about nothing all day then unless a trade happens.
Fair enough. Must be nice living in a headspace with such certainty…

The point of my post was that if a trade were to happen, based on recent experience, what might that look like?
You don’t need to agree with my presupposition. But it’s my post.
I’m spitballing.

Zegras isnt overpaid, and Dach won't still be playing by the time he hits 27, he may have had the highest ceiling but the guys been under the knife too many times and missed too many games. Chicago also punted on him because they had mishandled his development.

Colorado didn't have the time to wait for Newhook to develop into what they needed him to be.

This is why Montreal was able to acquire those players for the picks they paid, they were rehabilitation projects. Anaheim hasn't botched Zegras's development, he has a home on the roster that doesn't need to be vacated for someone else, and we don't have a problem making him a winger where he has less defensive responsibility, of which this season he had been playing the best defensive hockey of his career. We're developing him into a better 2 way player, which is a lot easier to do that to develop a two way player into an offensive threat.

And best line mates? You know how often he was put out their with Nick Delories or Sam Carrick? The only top line mate he's been out there with is Troy Terry who's a very good 2nd line winger.
