Monahan likely gets a cond first

Created by: Howie
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 20, 2024
Published: Jan. 20, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Mtl fans need to gauge expectations on a player that has poor analytics (idc about his linemates they represent him) and would be most likely a bottom 6 player on most contenders (boston and Colorado could maybe see him 2nd line). He isn't any teams top option and likely traded 1st before seeing a lindholm trade to compare and drive up interest. Still able to get a 1st just not guaranteed.
Trades
MTL
  1. Roobroeck, Dylan [Reserve List]
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
If nyr makes conference finals and Monahan (injury concerns) plays 50% of games upgrades to 1st

It's actually probably gonna start at a 1st and down grade if Monahan doesn't play 50% of the playoff games and the team doesnt win at least 1 playoff series. Which is what I have been saying all along, I just don't see Hughes agreeing to start at a 2nd and upgrading from there because there are playoff surprises that can't be accounted for

There has never been a trade that down grades not going to be the first now. It's going to be conditional if mtl gets a 1st and likely will be a 2nd to start as maybe trades came before it. Reminds me of a copp lite type deal tbh

Those playoff surprises are EXACTLY why the conditions are there. If he's injured and isn't a part of the run then it's a 2nd. If they don't make 3rd round it's a 2nd bruh

Since the best comparison is Copp (and you proved it by putting the same conditions), there needs to be another second and a prospect in the deal

I said copp lite genius. That's why one second is not there and jets also didn't get 2 prospects they had a pick swap from a 6th (wpg) to 5th (nyr). Mtl can probably get 2nd that can upgrade with the same copp conditions a prospect (not an elite level one look at morgan barron as an example) and the pick swap of a later pick

Thanks for that one. I used it. Andrew Copp (35 pts in 56 games) Monahan (28 pts in 45 games)

a 1st, a 2nd, 5th and Morgan Barron return. Holy moly!

Remove extra second and it's more likely tbh

Seeing that Copp return, no retention and a 3.6M AAV.. I think much like Chiarot and Lehkonen, Habs fans have undersold Monahan. @Campabee is correct.

A 1st plus a 2nd and a prospect should be the price unless more sellers come to the forefront.

Sorry for not reading a comment…

Monahan is equal to Copp’s trade year so the extra second needs to be there. That sixth round prospect has no value, so a prospect of Barron’s caliber has to be added too

The first was conditional with almost unobtainable conditions so it wasn’t supposed to be that big.

Im of the opinion that a late 1st and a 2nd are almost interchangeable at this draft. I'd be more than fine with 2 2nds as opposed to 1 1st with conditions or not

Conditions or not it’s probably a 1st and definitely another franchise

Only thing about the Copp trade, Copp was a better all around player at that time than Monahan is now. I think the second that upgrades to a first is fair with an added random prospect or depth player.

You sure about that? Copp and Monahan actually had the same defence according to JFresh Hockey. They were having a similar offensive and defensive season. Only difference is Monahan is a bit more injury prone but Copp never scores more than 40 pts before the season he was traded

Edit : Monahan actually had better defensive stats

Pageau to Islanders was also a similar situation. Stats here very close for this 3c. Got a top protected 1st, a 2nd and a conditional 3rd (for stanleycup win, didn't happen)

The offer itself isn’t bad at all, I’m just not sure Monahan is the best fit for the Rangers. They probably could use a more defense first kind of guy. Granted, I don’t see him everyday to know how good or bad he is..just based off what I’ve heard
