Glass is not an NHLer. Robertson looks like his is. Yeah Fabbro is OK but don't seed why they Leafs do the trade.
Dumba is expensive and really is he better than Liljegren now?

No thanks from NSH. Wouldn't mind taking a flier on Niemelä, but he's not enough of an asset for Fabbro, even without the retention.

I get that the famous Leaf fan recency bias is in effect with Robertson right now, given he's had a couple good games. And Glass' value is probably at an all time low right now. Robertson's still a tiny little china shop, taking the ice with a bunch of bulls though. I don't see NSH considering moving Glass for Robertson.

Honestly This makes our defense worse IMO. These arnt the style guys the leafs need to succeed in the playoffs.
Dumba is not very good at defence. He hits. thats about it. Hes overpaid IMO. When he broke into the league and he was the big hitter heavy shot guy playing on a heavy defesive system like Minnisota they could sheild his imperfections. on a team like Toronto those would be GLARING. The leafs need guys who can block shots, hit , and most of all play good defence.

Guys like
Joel Edmundsson would be HUGE
Ilya Libushkin.
Mario Ferraro
and then they need a minute eater BIG shutdown defencman.
They need that Zdeno Chara type defencman who can log those hard minutes in the playoffs and the team can Lean on. Reilly is good hes just not that guy you should be giving 23+ minutes to.

They need a guy like a
Noah Hanafin
a Colton Parayko
to me those are the 2 guys Toronto could get that would be exactly what they need.
Problem is Neither of those guys are being let go of unless toronto trades either Nylander (Not happenig now that he signed) or Minten or Cowan or Knies, Which its been said theyre not doing.

If the Leafs could somehow get either of those guys without giving up any of those pieces.
Even if it has to include 2 1sts Niemela , Robertson, whatever it takes to .
Honestly though if one of those 2 defencmen were coming back I would FOR SURE trade a
Cowan
and a 1st for one of them.

I would keep Liljgren over Dumba anyday. Dumba is NOT good at defence. He would get eaten alive in the mosh pit that is the toronto media . Hes not the guy toronto should be getting to play any minutes when theyre aleady not playing good defence for most of the year.

To start with Liljgren is better and more productive then dumba , then there's the age difference and quite simply Liljgrens ceiling hasn't even been reached yet. He has top pairing guy written all over him with time.

Leafs got good asset for sandin but pulled the trigger much to early on moving him as well. Don't need to make the same mistake

To be clear, I wouldn't trade him for dumba, I just wouldn't be against trading him in general. There's nothing at all to say he has top pairing potential, quite a lot to say he doesn't.

Also, it's yet to be seen whether we pulled the trigger too early on sandin, but I'm happy we now have Cowan in his place.

Agree with pretty much all of this. I think we need one more top pair TWD. I l would target guys like hanifin, chychrun or matheson if they're available. Fill the rest of the D core out with guys like edmundson, borgen, seeler, savard, etc.

Flip jarny for more of a PWF type who can retrieve pucks on the forecheck and battle for space. I don't think this team is as far off as people think.

Because Liljegren is good and is only 24. His best hockey is still ahead of him and he's an effective player right now.

When Rielly was 24 he had just scored 20 goals, 72 points, and was snubbed when not being made a norris finalist.

Liljegren has two goals and 7 assists, 5 of which are secondary. If we can upgrade on him, there's no reason we shouldn't do it.

Sandin is overrated. Guy was brutal at in zone coverage and he gets pushed around near the net. Fun to watch but not really great.

Rielly is better than Liljegren, always was and always will be. Liljegren isn't an offensive defenceman he's a two way guy who is really good at denying zone entries and has loads of talent that is still untapped. You are not really aware of who Liljegren is.

Liljegren is not great defensively either, he's very mediocre. The only people who thought otherwise are those who take team possession stats and try to scale them down to individual players. This makes the players who are most sheltered from defensive zone starts look like the best defensive players based on their evaluation.

Liljegren is more sheltered from defensive zone starts than any of our regular D, only Timmins and klingberg are started more in the offensive zone. That's because they're flawed defensively. Liljegren has been getting eaten alive by opposing team's forechecks, has been losing net front battles and has not shown great poise with the puck as of late.

By contrast, benoit is started in the defensive zone more than any of our D, because he's our best defensive D-man. Despite the major gap in their usage, benoit still somehow has a better CF%, the same stat used to suggest he went from being the worst defensive defenseman on the league's worst defensive team, to the best defensive defenseman on a top team in the leafs. Again, despite the difference in usage, he also has a better CF% rel and fewer GA/60.

In terms of actual goal differential, he's a +2, while liljegren is a +3. Given the roles they play and the players they share the ice with, this is a great look for benoit and a not so great one for liljegren.

This is the same reason lily lost his spot in the starting lineup in last year's playoffs, being passed by the likes of schenn, holl, gio, etc.

No matter how you evaluate him, lily really isn't anything special. He's at the age now where defenseman have already entered their prime years, so expecting him to become a top pairing D in the near future is simply naive.

I'll leave it at that.

It's not surprising you are saying stuff that you very obviously haven't looked into enough to say it. The most defensive zone starts on the team goes to Brodie, followed by Rielly and then McCabe and then Benoit.
