Hence the price of only a 2nd rounder. That is a pretty fair price to balance the risk vs reward.

That’s fine, but there needs to be significant salary going back to the jackets. 8.7M is a massive number to take on.

Ok. I respect that you don't like the deal. Thanks for the input, but it still looks like a pretty fair offer to me.

That may be, but fair value is far from the only consideration for a trade. Now, if you offered Svozil for Saad, I'd accept immediately. But the Blues feel no need to get rid of Binnington and an all offense RD is kinda the opposite of what they want in a Dman right now.

IDK Nova, I usually agree with your posts but I'd be hard-pressed to turn this down. Caps will have Backstrom and Mantha's caps off the books next year (almost 15 million). Why not take a shot on Laine who would only have two years left on his deal? Caps have a strong track record of taking cast-offs and scraps and turning them into valuable players.

While the Caps have had success in the past with Cast-offs, I find it a lot harder to buy into a cast off at 8 mil than it is in a castoff at 1-2 mil. If you get Laine at his best with no strings attached it could be fine, but I'm hard-pressed to think that's what the Caps will get at this point. I'm just not a huge fan on taking on all that money on a gamble, especially with so many other parts of the roster being flawed. But hey, I don't think its the worst idea in the world, just really weary of taking on 8.7 mil for the next 2 and 1/2 years.

He'd be a pretty natural replacement for Ovechkin.

Potentially, not sure the timeline fits super well though. I don't know if they want to bring in someone to pull away goals from Ovi at this point, for better or worse.

Would prefer not to do this if I'm the Caps. I don't think Laine is the right person to use the entirety of Backstrom's cap space on.

I get the appeal of Laine (especially at this price) and there's nothing this team needs more than elite scoring talent. That being said, I'm definitely on the "need bad money (aka Kuzy) going back)" side of this one. Laine is for all intents and purposes a strictly worse Ovechkin. The same crazy shot and physicality but the same complete inability to drive 5v5 metrics except when playing in very specific circumstances (not to mention needing to be in Ovi's office on the powerplay). I just don't think the Caps as currently constructed can afford to have two of those guys on the roster - especially when through bad luck and poor performances Laine hasn't been a consistent point scorer the past ~3 years.

If CBJ would take back Kuzy, do it 100% and worst case scenario you gave up a second to swap out center Kuzy for wing Kuzy. Without that though, I would rather spend that money in FA on a winger and defenseman (Mantha + Skjei?), try for a young guy not making quite as much money (Frost?), or get paid to take a gamble.
