Dont ask us for a 1st round pick

Description
DET, CAR, VGK fans - These aren’t trades, just using draft slots to show value of picks.

To anyone else trying to sell a rental to NJD for a 1st, please just realize it’s not a late 1st. It has the same value as two late 1sts…or same as 1st/2nd from Detroit…1st/2nd/3rd from Carolina…1st/2nd/3rd/5th/6th from VGK.

The pick value chart is not end all be all…but it’s useful guide
Trades
1.
NJD
  1. 2024 1st round pick (DET)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
#20 = 4.0
#53 = 1.4
DET
Our 1st is unfortunately too valuable to move for any rental. Right now it is #12 and if one uses the pick value chart, it is worth more than a 1st+2nd from Detroit.

    #12 = 5.5
    2.
    NJD
    1. 2024 1st round pick (CAR)
    2. 2024 2nd round pick (CAR)
    3. 2024 3rd round pick (CAR)
    Additional Details:
    #24 = 3.5
    #57 = 1.3
    #89 = 0.6

When Flames traded Bouwmeester they got at the time the 19th OV. Bouwmeester played well and the team did well and they played themselves into a later pick. Thats likely what would happen if Jersey traded for someone. Honestly I think if they were going to trade it, it would be for a goalie like Markstrom who’s signed for 3 more years and that’s their biggest weakness. But teams usually like to have an idea where they will be picking before they trade them for rentals. Or at least have conditions on the pick to protect it. So at this current position it makes sense for Jersey to not trade that pick for a rental. Also you should check out tankathon website. They track the draft picks based on points per game. So they take into account games in hand. Jersey would have the 15th pick currently.

Markstrom isn’t getting moved. Calgary appears to have been given a very clear “no retention mandate”, and without retention, 18 mill for Markstrom at age 34, 35 and 36.

Just to put into perspective, no goalie has been top 10 from age 34-36 in the last decade.

Henrik Lundqvist was elite every year. Then all of a sudden became a VERY mediocre goalie from age 34-36.

Whether it’s 12th or 15th, same principle applies.

But there is no available goalie worth that pick. Maybe a couple dmen.

And I think goaltending problems in NJ have been overstated. Injuries have hurt us. Losing two good veteran dmen in off-season has hurt us. Poor puck control, especially in d-zone, has hurt us. No goalie on market is going to solve those issues for us.

So the pick isn't as valuable until you have a shot at the #1 pick which makes sense. Wouldn't the 12th pick be more valuable than 13th-16th?

12th is more valuable than 15th. But 12-15 would likely be a pick we would keep. Pick 25-32 likely would get traded.

That makes sense. I'm not sure Yzerman trades his first even if Detroit make the playoffs.
