Description
Im seeing way too many Zegras to Montreal trades where the Habs give up either multiple 1st rounders or their own 2025 1st with additional assets. As if the Dubois saga didnt just happen a few months ago. Kind of the same situation as well. Young "star" player doesnt sign long term with team, gets their big deal and starts stinking up the place

Dubois and Zegras are somewhat similar. Both have "behavior and effort issues", both were 65 point players with PR suggesting they might be 80+ point player.

I dont touch Zegras unless the deal absolves the Habs on a cap dump. Like the trade would have to be so much in the Habs favor based on public perception that theres a less than 0.00001% chance it happens.

Like seriously, take a moment an think rationally about this. The Ducks are rebuilding and Verbeek has shown to be a very competent GM, but they are unwilling to give their 23 year old "superstar" a long term deal and then trades for what seems to be his direct replacement in Gauthier. Even without the performance and attitude rumours, this smells funky
Trades
ANA
  1. Anderson, Josh
  2. Barron, Justin
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
This is the most id give up for Zegras with my explanation above. Of course this doesnt happen, since the Ducks can scam some other team and get Dubois like assets for him. Habs shouldnt be willing to do that

You should try understanding why ZEGRAS wanted a bridge deal a season before the cap will start its significant rise. He’s maximizing his money. When he’s due another contract the cap will be significantly higher so when he asks for X% of the cap, the dollar amount will be a lot more.

Matthews did the same thing with his short extension.

It just came out that Zegras was furious with negotiations with the Ducks. Also why it took him until September to sign a deal. He obviously wanted a long term deal .hed actually make more money this way as well

8 year deal till hes 30 and then another 8 year deal until hes 38 >> bridge deal till 25, 8 year deal till 33 then if hes good enough, a 4-5 year deal, but most likely 1-2 year deals at a lower aav until he retires

Verbeek literally said that he wanted to bridge Zegras because he wanted to see his defensive game improve and then give him a long term contract? What’s wrong with that??

Zegras didnt want that. Which is a red flag

He was "insulted" by the Ducks offer. And he wanted a long term deal. He wanted his money and then check out. Like Dubois

Stop reading what Seravalli says, guy is a joke with his dart throws when it comes to Anaheim

Remember when he said Gibson said he will never play another game in Anaheim? I remember that too LOL

lol where are these red flags and

Assuming he's available (I did note your post below that his availability may be suspect) but that would be a red flag on its own.
You don't trade a young 60+ point player unless you have serious concerns. A trade for him has to assume that availability or there's just no real discussion to be had.

His defensive work not being satisfactory enough to earn him more than a bridge deal.
Delayed negotiations in getting that contract.
The injuries and poor production this year.
His primary identifying factor being Michigan goals.

Red flags may be too harsh, but that's the colloquial term. Yellow flags may be more appropriate.

the only thing I can see about him being "insulted" by the offer was when they were reportedly only offering him something in the $3-4MAAV range on his bridge deal - and obviously the Ducks didn't really take any of that to heart since they were perfectly happy to up their offer to 3x$5.75M. there doesn't seem to be any smoke to the zegras rumors anywhere but on trade boards like this.

Where did it come out that he was furious? And if you say Seravalli then just know he’s an idiot.

To get a long term deal now he would have signed to a lesser AAV. Long term deals coming off a ELC don’t get top dollar. When the cap goes up he can sign for a the same % of cap but get more money. He bet on himself.
