Going Out on a Limb

Description
I get that younger teams tend to be better, but we have Barzal, Ho Sang, Beauvillier and Pulock all on ELCs. That's a lot of young talent at the lowest possible price.

So if we can nab a TEMPORARY Top 6 piece for picks, we need to do that instead of dealing Barzal & Co. Here are a few options as I see them:

Trades
1.
NYI
    Zetterberg

I know a lot of Detroit fans want to see Zetterberg retire a Red Wing, and I wouldn't fault anyone for insisting that he's off limits for that reason. But if Detroit is serious about rebuilding, two 1st rounders for a 36 year old makes a lot of sense in my opinion.

      NYI
        H Sedin (50% retain)
        D Sedin (50% retain)

Vancouver, as I understand it, doesn't have quite the same zeal to keep the Sedins, and like Detroit, Vancouver needs to rebuild. They only have one year left on their contracts, and they're likely on the verge of retirement, so they don't quite get the same returns Zetterberg does, and there would need to be a lot of retaining to allow NYI to take on their cap hits. But all of that said, I thibk the Sedins would play well next to Ho Sang on the 2nd Line.

          NYI
            Carter

I admit this trade only happens if Los Angeles is ready to commit to a rebuild, and in my opinion, they definitely should. They're already relying on older Free Agents for scoring help, which is a bad sign, and with EDM, CGY and WPG all becoming the clear teams of the future in the West, it looks like it might be wise for LAK to read the writing on the wall and start selling for future assets. I just can't see them winning a Conference Championship with what they have. Brock Nelson, a 24 year old perennial 20 goal scorer, would be a good combination of youth and experience to help guide the rebuild process all the way through. Two 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder in what is shaping up to be a strong draft year would be extremely valuable even to a team that isn't rebuilding.

Carter has slowed down yet, and his cap hit isn't too high. If Kings were truly in a rebuild its's a reasonable trade. But I it would tell the LA fan base, we don't plan on winning soon.
Red Wing fans know best, but just for future cap space and a rebuild, the Wings say yes. But keep Zettenberg and his 6m plus salary might really hurt the possibility of signing Tavares.
Sedins are waiving their NMC for the Isles.

True, but this would only be for one more year. Their salaries would definitely be off the books by the time the Nucks are competitive again.

With Kulemin and Halak coming off the books next year, that should clear enough space for Tavares. Though now that you mention it, this trade would disrupt resigning de Haan. If Detroit would be willing to take a bad contract back in this trade, it'd solve a lot of problems. Halak maybe? I've seen a few DET fans interested in him. Worse comes to worse, he could just buy out Kulemin. The penalty would only last until the end of next year.

              Thanks for the feedback!

That is a little much for Zetterberg. The wings get 2 first round picks and 6 mill in cap space for a 36 year old.

He is coming off a 68 point year, so he can't have entirely lost his touch yet. The reason I've been pursuing older Top 6 Forwards is because I think Matt Barzal and Josh Ho Sang will both grow into an Elite Forwards within the next two or three years. All we need is someone proven to plug into the Top 6 until they're ready. The Sedins and Zetterberg will all likely retire by the time that happens, but in the meantime, would be high quality Top 6 forwards that the Isles could acquire without losing high end prospects or current roster pieces.

He is talking about the rule that teams are only allowed to retain salary on 3 total contracts in a season. If Vancouver is already retaining on 2 contract + 2 Sedins = 4
