You have to be joking with that Hanifin trade. D isn't even a need for COL.

Without retention, the owners know the trade returns will be a lot less, I assume?

I don't see why the Flames ownership should worry about a let's say 3m in cap retention for the rest of the season.
Thye have wasted so much in the past few years and not making the playoffs....what's one more year?

0% Colorado can keep Hanifin beyond this season

0% chance Colorado gives up a 1st+Byram for a rental at a position they don't even need.

Not really. A 3rd Team can be included to do the retention, especially if it’s just for a Late Pick as compensation

You're having a giraffe. The Avs wouldn't do Byram for Hanifin 1 for 1.

yes they could however that gets more complicated and they now risk losing a player for nothing vs getting something plus a late pick.
especially when you look at and contending team they are all cap strapped.

It makes 0 sense unless the owner is running out of money in which case that bad news bears for the flames.

The contending Team would get a non-contending team with cap space to do the retention

CGY Ownership seems to just be real cheap and unwilling to pay players to play on other teams

I too don’t see the issue on retaining salary though if it’s just for the remainder of the season, especially in exchange for a mid-to-late Pick that could produce another Gaudreau, Mangiapane or Wolf
