I think both teams would be happy with this.

Essentially a 1st for Tanev since Steeves/Timmins have zero value. But a 1st probably gets it done.

But the Leaf’s have barked up this tree before and we’re told retention was a deal breaker. So how do they fit Tanev in?

Matthews has earned it, not the team. Still, a 1st is too much to give up for a rental. Leafs should trade with another team.

The question should be to the Leafs or any buyer.....Is the UFA player obtained going to make any difference in the teams fortunes this season?

In the hundreds, maybe thousands of posts, I have never read that anyone says that the fourth best Flames Dman is going to change the Leafs fortunes. If Tanev (or any player) isn't going to make a difference, why make the trade.?

This trade makes a lot of sense for both sides.

Leafs always trade 1sts for rentals. What are you on about?

Treliving traded our firsts so many times. He’s got such an ego that he just wants to be the guy who is always willing to add no matter what damage he’s doing for the future.

Yeah, and we have seen how poor those trades were.. So many picks traded for one playoff round win. I would say that if the Leafs would have kept those picks, some of the players would be Leafs and the Leafs would have won more playoff rounds.

The guy who traded a 1st to dump Monahan? And many other trades involving the 1st that didn’t pan out? That new guy?

He did what he had to do to get Calgary in the playoffs because the owner probably didn't want to go through a rebuild. Monahan wasn't living up to his contract. Giving a 1st in that situation is the price of poker. And most GMs are better at their second jobs. I assume Treliving will be more cautious and conservative, at least for the next two drafts because the Leafs barely have any top picks.

I don't mind him shipping out 1sts to strengthen a contender or rebuild a roster on the fly. But this team isn't one.

He did it to overpay Kadri. And they didn’t make the playoffs. Now the Flames are saddled with an overpriced 2C and the franchise is in shambles neeeding to sell off assets cause no one sees a future with what Tre built. Literally everyone that can get out, is getting out.
