what I would do

Created by: Pensfan303
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2024
Published: Feb. 18, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The pens aren't cup contenders and frankly are simply too inconsistent to even be playoff contenders with how the bottom 6 is not scoring and the PP being beyond trash.

Best case scenario for this team is to squeak in and maybe pull off a 1st round upset but, that's about it. I don't see this team making a run and frankly I really wouldn't be surprised if they miss out.
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Akey, Beau
  2. McLeod, Ryan
  3. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Now the rumored price for Guentzel is a Claude Giroux package which was a 1st, Owen Tippett and a 3rd which EDM can easily match and should if they are serious about contending. Now unlike Giroux who decided it was Florida or nothing, Guentzel will have multiple suitors even if hes injured right now so the price may be driven up a bit for the best TD piece on the market.

Ryan Mcleod would be my target piece for the young NHL ready forward piece in this deal (Owen tippett). Mcleod would add size and much needed speed right away to the pens lineup and could finally be the solution at 3C if not 2C with Geno moving to the wing but that's another conversation.

Beau Akey would be the 2nd piece I would target from EDM in this trade. He's a great skater and a right shot Dmen who the pens have 0 of in the system. Sadly he has only played 14 games this season due to injury but he still remains a good defensive prospect which you can never have too many of. He projects to be a top 4 defender.

3rd for Ned
Mcleod, Akey, 1st for Guentzel
EDM
  1. Guentzel, Jake ($3,000,000 retained)
  2. Nedeljkovic, Alex
Additional Details:
Ned has been a good back up this season and should fetch a 3rd round pick with the limited affordable goaltending on the market come deadline.

Jake, although a great player, it's time to move one from him as this team needs 2-3 players for 9-10 mil rather than 1 for 10 mil. Sid if he keeps going can easily play with Rakell and X piece and this team desperately needs to get younger and faster. As much as I love Jake, the time has come to move on and slightly re-tool the forward group.

I chose Edmonton as the landing spot for both Ned and Jake because not only have they been heavily linked to Guentzel, Draisaitl with Guentzel would be a deadly 2nd line combination.
EDM also needs more depth in net and Ned is arguably the best 1B option out there.
2.
PIT
EDM
  1. Carter, Jeff
Additional Details:
If someone wants him at 50% and he agrees to waive, he can go for a late pick
3.
PIT
  1. 2025 5th round pick (TBL)
TBL
  1. Joseph, Pierre-Olivier
Additional Details:
POJ has fallen out of favor in Pittsburgh and needs a change of scenery.

I chose Tampa here because they recently lost Sergachev and could look at a young, cheap OFD to fill a hole for the rest of the year and see if they can unlock his potential.
4.
PIT
  1. 2024 4th round pick (VAN)
VAN
  1. Ruhwedel, Chad
Additional Details:
Good 6th DFD, would be a good add on any contender looking for a right shot depth dmen.

so basically do nothing.

Outside trading Jake to recoup some assets the biggest thing that should be looked into is moving one of Smith or Rakell (or both).

Get as much cap space for the summer as possible.

I don't feel like moving Rakell is possible and Smith is more of a draft day trade IMO

Canucks decline. Not giving up a 4th for what would at best be an 8th defender who we'd have to put on waivers.
