Hanafin to Leafs incoming

Created by: Prime_Jimbo
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2024
Published: Feb. 19, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hanafin won't re-signed or at least that's being reported. But the market will be there still.

Top teams will be in on Hanafin so a late first is a given. A secondary pick is also likely. Timmins may not be the most sought after player but he is young and RHD. Chadwick is a big lad and potentially slipped in the draft. This could be an offer to get it done.

Holmberg is the "icing on the cake". Not getting a shot in Toronto. Potentially intriguing enough for the Flames who will look to add C depth as well.

Other teams in on Hanafin might be TB or NJ. I don't think there are too many suitors or a huge need for LHD in the market but TO makes the most sense.

Even if Noah Hanifin were to waive for Toronto, And i'm not convinced he would. He's still a 100% rental there as he absolutely isn't signing long term in Canada. He wants to go to free agency. And Frank Seravalli said that he's extremely interested in signing with Tampa long term.

That’s about the return I’d expect. Doesn’t sound like retention will be easy…may have to be third team.

Don't know how Tampa would afford that lol

They'd 100% have to let Steven Stamkos walk, As there's no way they can afford both players.

Can't see the Leafs having an interest at that price. LHD isn't a real needed. Holmberg is getting a shot and will be even more needed when one or both of Domi and Bertuzzi are gone next season.

I think there are probably two buckets (1) where he could be traded and (2) where he could sign. Good chance there is only a little overlap. He only has 8-team NTC.

And it’s not ideal for Calgary

That's a really bad return even as a rental.

No guarantee he would re-sign. But, he could end up liking Toronto. Either way, feels like a good spot for a pus without the guarantee.

Idk he knows Brad and Brad wouldnt make the move unless he knew for sure he could get him extended as thats Brad's style

Brad traded for him when he was in CAR and they had a good relation. If money is there probs would see it like Lindholm when he went to BOS.

Don't think it will be much higher than this. I mean seriously, if the Flames were saying that, teams would just say forget it and they'd either be chasing their tales for a deal or he walks for free.

Teams should never acquire a player a rental in the "hope" of resigning him. As for the Leafs, I think they are fine at LHD even next season.
Just a note on Holmberg. I've been impressed and at 800,000 next season he's a bargain. Chadwick has hope as NHLer in maybe three years and Niemela in two.
I'm surprised folks said that Hanifan offer would be beat by so many teams. Gee, if "their" team offered as much, they would probably balk at the .
Leafs rank 28th in prospects. I don't see them giving any away. It's been a losing proposition for seven seasons.

Yeah he knows Brad and he also knows Brad was shopping him at the deadline every year for the last several years in Calgary. However if Brad offers him enough money and a NMC (Brad handed those out like candy in Calgary) he'd do it.

I disagree. He should fetch more then a late 1st, a 3rd pairing D and a couple C prospects. This would be a terrible return looking at historical comparables.

Leafs are slowly moving out of the Hanifin sweepstakes. The ask from Calgary has been Minten + 24’ 1st as the starter and Toronto doesn’t wanna move either of those for a rental. Hanifin has a bit of interest in signing an extension with Toronto because of Treliving, but it’s not a team that’s high on his list so I doubt Toronto makes a move for him without knowing for sure that an extension is more likely

Give a good example then. Rentals have a trend. Calgary won't open the door for him to negotiate prior to and the Flames lost leverage as soon as negotiations soured.

Definitely too much to include Minten then imo. Not unless the Flames let him negotiate an extension prior to a deal.

Idk why Leafs fans are so high on Minten. He’s not as great of a prospect as they seem to think. He’ll likely be a 3rd line forward that can play a bit of centre but likely settles on the wing.. that’s not that great of value for a prospect. If they can get a legit top 4 d-man for him I can’t see why not including him
