The maximum Carolina will spend on any rental is a 3rd round pick

Description
I read the transcript of Pierre Lebrun's interview with Carolina's GM Don Waddell.

https://theathletic.com/5283977/2024/02/19/hurricanes-trade-deadline-plans-don-waddell/

And one thing that stood out to me was that Carolina will never spend much, if anything, on a rental.

It doesn't matter how good the rental is or what he would bring to the Hurricanes in their quest for the Cup.

The most Carolina under Waddell ever spent on a rental was a 3rd round pick.

For Sami Vatanen and Shayne Gostibehere respectively.

So, if you're looking to get anything more than a 3rd round pick for your All-Star rental, Carolina will tell you to kick rocks.

Anaheim and Pitty also tell you to kick rocks. Waddell should learn that Guentz is insane. As a canes fan I'd love Guentz he is a great goal scorer who'd fit amazingly with KK and Jarvis.

Yeah, this is nothing new. Overall, CAR is managed well, but, in my opinion, far too cautiously at times. I suppose CAR being a relatively small market could partially be a reason for management’s caution? However, there have been times where I’ve felt that that talented of a team deserved a real push to help them get over the hump. Just my two cents.

When you draft as well as Carolina does, I think it's a smart use of assets to not throw those picks away.

How many 1st round picks were utilized in trades between teams like Boston, Toronto, New Jersey, and the Rangers last season? Yet only 2 of those teams made it to the 2nd round before being eliminated. Spending premium assets on rentals does not guarantee playoff success.

Part of the reason they can’t win a cup. They didn’t want to pay to replace Svechnikov last year

Canes made their big bets in UFA with Orlov and Bunting so it makes sense they wouldn't trade a good asset now. Turbo is likely on his way out to sign Jarvis and Necas.

Orlov signing was slightly puzzling but I guess they felt Bunting was enough of a forward add.

Drury has played very well so the need for another center/forward diminished as well.

7 of their 24 on the roster were drafted by them. Which seems to be overwhelmingly average in the top 16

Svechnikov was injured after the trade deadline, can't do much to replace him at that point.

The Canes new regime’s first draft was 2018, prospects need time to turn into actual NHLers. Drury was a part of that 2018 class and is just now getting his crack as a full time player. The Canes pipeline is widely regarding as top 10-15 in the league, which is very impressive given that they’ve been a contender with mostly late picks over the past 5 years.

You’re right, Don Waddell should’ve looked into the future and seen that Svechnikov was going to get injured after the trade deadline.

Then you have zero chance of acquiring Henrique

I agree.

But this AGM is more about what Carolina will do.
