If Nikishin was unavailable for Meier who had control, we can assume he wouldn’t be available for a guy who they can’t re-sign

Why couldn’t you resign him?

He wouldn’t be able to be extended until July 1st and Buchnevich has all the control in those talks

They don’t give long extensions to players in their 30’s

Buch has another year left after that one. If he was a pending UFA, you couldn't afford him this szn. But the season after that, you probably can.

Are you asking Blues or Canes here?

Asking the best comp between a habs prospect and Nikishin. That's what i mean't by Habs Term.

Nikishin wasn’t available for 9 years of Meier, why would he be available for 1.5 years of Buchnevich? Besides, with how the current roster is set up, it hinges on Nikishin coming over.

Im aware of his contract status. He has no control or ability to extend at the time of the trade. Seeing his age and the canes unwillingness to pay non core players into their mid 30s, it’s unlikely the canes will give him his bag of money. So Nikishin would be out of the question for 1.25 seasons of buchnevich

Yeah - but you play in a tax free, good weather, not uber intensive media market. Think someone like Buch would be more than willing to extend.

I’m sorry - but you are being a huge homer if you think that and you are going to be disappointed at some point

Our taxes are lower than northern and western teams but we aren’t texas, Florida, and Tennessee

The problem with Nikishin, as good as he may be, is that there will be only 4 years of guaranteed control. At earliest, he will debut as 24 year old rookie.

2025-26 ELC
2026-27 RFA 1
2027-28 RFA 2
2028-29 RFA 3

Then could be UFA as early as July 1, 2029

Reinbacher?

He's one of the best defensive prospect so... a better version of Lane Hutson

Nikishin is considered a better prospect currently than Reinbacher in my opinion.

I believe, like Panarin, his birthday is after the deadline and he will have to sign a 2 year ELC. Unless he extends for another year in Russia.

Yes…I think you are right.

I was mapping a line to UFA…and skipped over some of the details. Here is corrected…

2025-26 ELC 1
2026-27 ELC 2
2027-28 RFA 1
2028-29 RFA 2

UFA on July 1, 2029 (or later)

Since KHL ends earlier, he could also sign for end of 2024-25 season and burn a year of ELC. Jump into next years playoff mix. That would give Canes 4+ years minimum.

Nikishin is at least as highly rated/valuable as Reinbacher, and probably a little more. It would not be crazy if someone thought he was the best Dman playing outside the NHL. Kid is a monster and already captain of SKA at 21, which is unheard of.

I don’t know - your original franchise once traded the Blues a young Chris Pronger for Brendan Shanahan, just figured we could revisit 😀

There is a reason why the Canes are more successful than the Whalers, and why the Canes are located in NC. Let’s not revisit those mistakes, shall we.
