Next years plan unrealistic but hopeful

Created by: Rob32sjsharks
Team: 2024-25 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 29, 2024
Published: Mar. 1, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kinda want to wait to publish till post TDL because I have a feeling a few of these guys (beyond the 3 D men I have posted) are moved, but this is the outlook I would hope for for next year.

24 Draft
Sharks get 1st overall pick after tanking the end of the year and winding up with 3 points less than Chicago.

1st OA Macklin Celebrini LHC
15th OA Adam Jiricek RD
33rd OA Cole Beaudoin LHC
52nd OA Yegor Surin LHF
(Hugo Havelid G with later pick)

Forsling and Roy (not necessarily these two but players like them) give the sharks 2 legit top 4 D to build around. Mukhamadulin will be up next year and likely paired with Ferraro, Embersom and Thrun are best suited as 3rd pair guys for now. Top pair is good, but #4-6 guys are still very young and a couple years away from their prime.

Forward group is a nice mix of rookies couple younger players and some older Vets. Biggest drawback here though is the best players in this group are nowhere near their prime yet.

Sharks go back with Kahkonen and Blackwood. The tandem has played pretty decently considering the team in front of them this year!

This team is leaps and bounds better than the 23/24 version with a lot more skill but by no means is this playoff team, yet! With 7 players in their 1st or 2nd year the team will have ups and downs, but Sharks now have a foundation to build with and team that has a fighting chance every night.

Might be a year too soon to go big in the FA market and not sure how I'd feel about the deals for those two, but not the worst. I think AB and Duke are both too much $ and too long.

Musty will likely need another year before the NHL, and wouldn't be against Smith/Celebrini going back to NCAA for another year but I'd understand if they want to make the jump.

Mostly agree with the draft picks (if SJ isn't #1 they should do the same 1C/W 1 RHD with the picks). Another top 3 pick in '25 would set them up well.

    Yes, Celebrini is a Shark!
I agree on Hugo Havelid. Collect the set.
We do need a top D pair. One of whom can run the pp and move the puck. Not sure if those two are it or if FA is the way to get that top D pair.
I would trade Duclair, Barabanov, and Kahkonen at the TDL if I could get 3rd or 2nd round picks.
    Agree on buying out Vlasic.
Agree we should eventually trade Benning, Burroughs, and Rutta. Might keep Rutta as a mentor for younger D until the 2025 TDL in the lasr year of his contract. Not sure it makes sense to move Mukh to LD.

Love Forsling and Roy and understand that in order to play in San Jose we would need to overpay, but I think this is a little too steep.

Do not really agree with the keeping Duclair, Barabanov, Kahkonen, unless we dealt them at deadline and they come back.

99.9% of my ACGM posts are exactly what you mentioned above. I’m not sure I want Celebrini Smith Musty coming up this that fast. I want all 3 to work on their all around game and come in in 25 ready to tear up the leauge. I also want to see what we have with Bordeleau and Gushchin first as well.

That being said I wanted this post to show even without trading everyone the sharks will still be in good shape next year. Sharks do need a top4 D ASAP to help these kids and be a mentor, and sharks will need to acquire a FA or two just to get to the cap floor! Even with me signing Barbi Duke Forsling and Roy they still have 11 mil in cap space and will have even more in 25/26.

Mukh has played a lot at RD and is very comfortable there and if the best option for a top line D is a LD I’m totally ok moving him from LD to RD.

Havelid is very good but his size will be his biggest Achilles Heal (5’10”) but you can’t ignore his production. And I see him being a good 1B / backup in the NHL. I want the sharks to look at Pyotr Andreyanov in 25 draft and if we could grab him and Havelid they would finally have a strong goalie prospect group.

Duclair has been such a good mentor for the guys and his play has been picking up and he looks like he’s finally back from the Achilles injury. I would keep him for his locker room presence and production. I love Barbi but this has been a bad year and he’s not likely to get much trade interest, feel he rebounds strong next year and I’d like to keep him if the price is right.

Rutta I would 100% be on board keeping him unless we can get a guy like Roy to replace him.

Forsling has been playing stronger and stronger and is good 2 way (look at his plus minus) and the first half of the season he was recovering from major injuries. I have zero issue giving him that deal. Same with Roy, he’s not a huge point guy but his D is Vlasic prime level and has good size.
Both of those deals don’t hurt the sharks cap wise and give them a D group that can compete with the western teams. By the time those two deals are near ending you have Jiricek who will be top 4 ready and with those two on the team you’re not rushing any players or putting them in roles they aren’t ready for. If we could get them cheaper I’m on board.

Kahkonen Barbi and Duclair are good players and good teammates and I would like the keep them (short term) and let the younger guys mature then when the younger guys are pushing them out we move them.

Oh yeah his +/- is off the charts, I say if he wants to come, which I assume would only happen if we draft 1OA, fine take a splash. Roy too, but I think you are overpaying him.

I don’t agree with keeping those guys around tbh especially at those prices, I would rather either find someone younger, or really give gushchin a shot. Maybe keep Duke around.

With that being said this is an okay team, and If this all happens I would absolutely be excited to watch.
