Bozak trade

Created by: SuprDave45
Team: 2017-18 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2017
Published: Jul. 17, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rangers need a top 6 center and have an overload on D.
Holden plays both sides on D, is coming off a good year (11g/23a) and only costs 1.65 against the cap.

Toronto needs cap relief as they are 4m over, and still have to sign RFA Conner Brown. They also have several young options to replace Bozak at center. Because of this, Bozak likely isn't in their long term plans, so he will likely be moved at some point anyway.

All of this means a trade makes too much sense!

Trades
TOR
  1. Holden, Nick
  2. Tambellini, Adam
  3. 2019 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
The prospect and/or pick are open to debate, I see Tambellini as giving up a center in return. However Toronto may value one of the other forwards more.

Leafs already shot down a trade for Bozak involving Holden, but maybe the extra assets could entice them, although I haven't heard too much about Tambellini

Tambellini is probably a career AHLer.

Agree with this guy. Bozak scored 50pts on the 3rd line last year, most then most teams 2nd line C. Leafs are also clearly in a win now mode so there's absolutely no value for the return your giving us. Rangers don't have a lot of assets that would entice us besides roster players, so I just don't see a fit unless NYR are willing to give more or make it into a larger deal

No, the Leafs are not in cap hell this year. 10.5m is coming off with LTIR to Horton and Lupul. Leafs don't need Holden, this Tambellni is not a NHLer and the distant pick don't help the Leafs centre now. Bozak is needed by the Leafs.

Wait they shot down a trade with Holden? Is that 100% guaranteed?

Yes, the Leafs management were uninterested in him and seeking a larger package that the Rangers possibly weren't willing to fill. Other teams interested were Pittsuburgh (believed to be package including Maata) but not much past that.

When does this 10.5m magically return? because every published report says the Leafs have a cap issue without even counting whatever Connor Brown makes (throw 2m on the fire), I didn't just invent this idea.

How does a 2019 pick not help a team who's best players are under 23? You are win now because of Patrick Marleau? 8th seed/first round exit this year....that's what rates as win now? Kinda short sighted, no? Marleau isn't going to get you past the Caps & Pens (he is a there as a mentor, not a game changer)....your kids will get you where you want to go in say 2-3 years when they hit their primes! Leaf fans should be super excited about the future, but to say win now.....?

You can totally have the argument about the pieces...and Holden is certainly not enough alone, but one way or another someone is being traded from the Leafs to clear cap. Bozak or JVR are the obvious choices, the question is only what you get in return. You can also argue other teams have something more interesting to offer, fair enough...I get it. But wishing something was true doesn't make it true...you need cap space!

BTW Holden = plays both sides on D, is coming off of 11g/23a = 34 pts (3rd on Leafs) +13 (2nd on Leafs) season...only makes 1.65m against the cap...and played top 4 on a team that finished 7 points ahead of the Leafs in the standings. I am not saying he's Bobby Orr, but he is a commodity. Plus some form of prospect and a pick?... lets not act like i am offering a can of tuna.

While on the subject of value...

Tyler Bozak just had a career year with 55 points...at 31 years old...and has never previously scored over 50 points in a season. I'm not saying he is a scrub, far from it, he is a commodity no doubt, even more so than Holden, totally agree! But he isn't irreplaceable...and he isn't a first line center either that should fetch a first rounder or stud prospect. The leafs should totally be asking for that, but in the end it isn't likely to happen.

It's all a matter of opinion, which is why we are even talking...fans being fans...but lets not get carried away! lol I guess we shall see!
