Matt Roy is the Kings' best defensive defenseman, and doubly critical to Los Angeles while his defense partner is week-to-week. Trading him would be tantamount to abandoning any hope of going far in the playoffs and maybe even reaching them in the first place unless they got an asset of equal and immediate value in return. My conviction is that the only guy on your roster for whom they would trade Roy is Morgan Reilly*, and that ain't happening because he's untouchable.

* because it's inconceivable that one of the Big Four would be available

NJD needs a goalie and that's kind of the point of trading future assets and young players.

Totally makes sense, but we are going to get Roy to Toronto trades every day until the deadline still.

Fari enough, and the Kings could make a run, but the West is loaded up top. I could see them focusing on the future and trading him as he's a pending-UFA and they may not be able/willing to resign him, especially when you get decent value back in a potential Top-4 defender in Liljegren and a 1st this year.

The Kings do not care that he is pending FA. They'll try to resign him, and if they don't they'll consider him a rental. There is NO WAY the Kings trade Roy. Lilijegren has no value to the Kings they don't need a young RD. They have Clarke and Spence both ready to fill in the gap that losing Roy in the off season leaves. Good luck in your endeavors.

Is Toronto "focusing on the future"? Why should the Kings?

Assuming that your team can't compete with other teams in the Conference is defeatism of the worst kind. And there is absolutely no reason to believe that Timothy Liljegren will have a greater future impact than Jordan Spence -- never mind Brandt Clarke -- so the appeal of his "potential" is extremely limited.

You left out that the Knights currently have higher odds to miss the playoffs entirely than the Kings. Currently the Kings and Oilers could be battling out for Second in the Conference down the stretch due to SoS.
