Description
DEPARTURES:
I feel like Smith & Eller are two players we can move this offseason. If we cannot move Eller, I would try and move Acciari instead, but I would keep at least one of them.
I dont think we will be able to move Rakell, but if you can, I would consider.
If Blomqvist isnt ready, I would bring back Ned on a 1-2 year deal.

WEAPONIZING CAP:
With so much cap, I would try and weaponize it a bit. Other options include Faksa (DAL), Campbell (EDM), Goodrow (NYR). In this trade, WPG moves out nearly $6M by sending us their bottom pairing D and a young forward who does not play much, as well as a 3rd. They get a veteran back in Nieto.

YOUNG TALENT:
I would love to see a big influx of young talent on the roster. DOC & Puustinen are already playing in the NHL right now. I do think Poulin and Ponomarev will join the roster at some point this season, so we will see if they do well enough to stick around for next year. I do not think Yager or Pickering are ready just yet.

FREE AGENTS/NEW PLAYERS:
If we decide to not weaponize cap, I can see us targeting a dman or two via free agency. I would also like to sign a winger. I went for DeBrusk, because he is on the younger side of UFAs available. I can also see us getting roster players back for Smith/Eller and not get as high/any picks in return.

I know Dubas is against it, but I don't think a Reilly Smith buyout would be that terrible. I have a hard time finding a suitable trade for him in 2024-2025.

That’s by far my biggest problem with Dubas, the anti-buyouts. His biggest mistake of the entire offseason was not using a buyout on Granlund before free agency opened. Had he done that it would have created not only another roster spot open in the forward group, but freed up a couple million more before UFAs signed. That could have helped us attract another forward for a middle 6 role and of course it would have avoided an unnecessary trade for EK.

Makes absolutely no sense for WPG to spend that many assets to dump Schmidt in his final year. They can easily retain half and get late pick back or just buy him out. They have enough bottom six players and dont need Nieto.

no thanks to buying out Granlund. He made the right call on the trade. Buyouts stink.....aka J.Johnson. still paying him

I defo think someone out there pays for Smith. We can definitely trade him for a return.
