top 4 ECHL defender making 3.5m. Ceci is a cap dump. Only reason we wasnt traded this deadline was because the locker room likes him

Ceci is a cap dump. Was nearly traded for nothing at the deadline but hes too loved in the locker rn. The second they lose out (because of their bad defence), hes shipped out

Ceci is not a cap dump. He's been placed in the top-4 by his last 3 teams and like 6 coaches. But I guess you know more than they do.

3 teams. And the Oilers are pretty good defensively under Knoblauch. Since he took over Nov 12 they have allowed the 4th fewest goals at 5v5, due to the fact that they've allowed the 5th fewest shots and the 5th fewest high danger chances.

They also have the best record in the NHL in that timeframe.

Clearly you haven't been paying attention.

just cuz you try and upgrade on a player doesnt mean that player is bad or a cap dump just means there are players that are also better than him.
Ceci would be top 4 on like 27-28 of the 32 teams.

as for the oilers defensive game you clearly havent watched this season after the coaching change..

NSH declines. NSH already has a wealth of LD's both in the NHL and waiting in the AHL, and NSH would rather get younger than older. They have plenty of veteran leadership and don't need to add another, especially at the cost of a 1st round pick, even though it isn't theirs.

Ceci is in the 9th percentile in 5v5 defense. Thats well below replacement level. Hes not even a goods PKer. Ceci stinks. And his paid about 3 million too much. Hes a cap dump

Ah yes 34 year old McDonagh and 33 year old Josi. They wont fall off a cliff anytime soon.

Ceci isnt the reason why. 9th percentile 5v5 defence. Maybe it has to do with Ekholm not struggling and Skinner not being Jack Campbell

Ceci plays harder minutes than Ekholm by far. His QoC is nearly as high, zone starts v Elites far harder, and he doesn't get to play with McDavid nearly as much as Ekholm.

He's not a world beater, but he is a legit top-4 NHL defenseman. Edmonton isn't making trade without a top-10 pick coming back.

ahhh so your the one who just looks at player cards and has no clue on how they actually get those numbers but will blindly follow them as fact! so short sighted my friend best of luck to you.
my suggestion is try to watch a game or maybe even 2 it will help you out in the long run!

Yes i did, Ceci is a cap dump. Holloway is worth like a 2nd rounder these days, maybe even less. It would cost him to take Ceci back

Just because you play better minutes does make you good. Hes 9th percentile 5v5 defense. Hes awful. He either needs to play less (and paying a 3rd pair guy 3.5m is funny) or get rid of him

I always find it funny when keyboard warriors find a "one number" metric that they think completely defines a player, despite obvious evidence that multiple NHL coaches have come to a different conclusion.

Edmonton declines your putrid trade offer, because reality.

Have a great day.

Ah yes, and Josi is still nearly a point per game and has not shown any signs at this point of starting to slow down as he is still arguably NSH's best player, despite being 33 years old. To say Josi is going to fall off a cliff in the next year or two shows that you aren't fully educated on what Josi does for NSH. Josi continues to be one of NSH's top offensive drivers and has even improved his game under Burnette. McDonaugh isn't what he used to be, but he has been more than serviceable in the role he has always served as a shutdown defenseman. To suggest that NSH should accept this because their current top two on LD are hypothetically going to be deadweight soon just because of their age is the epitome of a strawman.

NSH declines this because they don't need Matheson now or in the future. Speaking on the now, where would NSH put Matheson? NSH already has a logjam at D and bringing in Matheson only makes that worse. Regarding the future, NSH already has 3 NHL quality LD's sitting in the AHL, all of whom are younger than Matheson and will help NSH more long-term. Additionally, NSH has Molendyk as another top prospect, who was drafted to be Josi's replacement and is looking to be ready for NHL time within the next year or two.

A first-round pick is more valuable than a defenseman that NSH doesn't need now or in the future.
