Leafs 24-25 Offseason Moves Win Now Scenario

Created by: thecinephilefish
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 20, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
WIN NOW Scenario

Re-sign Reasoning:
1. Benoit: Solid 3rd pair LD. No stellar output so far so will be cheap to bring back. Much needed physicality.
2. Dewar: Young 4th liner, good defensively, penalty killer, 2-year bridge deal to gage development.
3. Jones: Solid 3rd Goalie given Woll's injury. 1-year deal before Woll signs long-term next season.
4. Domi: 2nd/3rd line playmaking / checking forward. Has grit and decent 2nd/3rd line offensive output. Will sign slightly cheaper for 3-year deal.
5. Steeves: AHL
6. Webber: AHL
7. Desharnais: Big body on 3rd D pairing.
8. De Haan: Reliable 7th D.

Free Agent Reasoning:
1. Roy: 1-year deal with NMC with the promise of an extension with a pay bump next season once the Tavares contract is off the books. Physical defensive 1st pairing presence beside Rielly (or go for DeMelo).
2. Stenlund: Physical 4th line presence and penalty killer. Fits the age profile.
3. Stolarz (or Brossoit): 1-year deal. Re-evaluate goalie situation post Tavares contract expiry.
4. Stephenson: Intangibles, playoff experience, cup winner, grit, 2C. 1-year NMC deal because of cap crunch. Promise raise post Tavares.

Trade Reasoning:
1. Crouse: Physical 1st line presence. Size is also useful for screens. Crease crasher so Mattews can set up at the right point. Arizona gets a young piece in Robertson (doesn't fit immediate TOR needs or timeline) for their rebuild. Jarnkrok will be a decent Mid-6 forward in Arizona that can be flipped at the deadline. 2026 3rd (conditional 2026 1st) to even the values.
2. Durzi: 2nd Line RD. Good two-way player. Fits well alongside McCabe. Provides secondary offense. Traded for 2024 1st (no player we draft this year would fit the timeline, made a mistake not trading this pick at the deadline - only reasoning for keeping it is that Brad is going to use it to trade up in the Draft). 2024 1st will also enable Kampf contract dump. (Or go for Sean Walker).

Let Go Reasoning:
1. Liljegren: Hasn't lived up to promise. Not particularly good at anything. Has improved slightly but this team needs to win now. Ship his RFA rights to Calgary for a 2025 3rd and 2026 6th/7th
2. Bertuzzi: Under-delivered this season. Not worth over 4m at this point so no point in resigning him.
3. Bush/Edmundson: Good playoff bodies but don't add much during the regular reason. Might trade from them next deadline again.
4. Samsonov/Muzzin/Klingberg/Gio/Brodie: Good riddance.

ARZ turns down both those offers.

Jarnkrot is probably worth a 3rd at best, Robertson a low round 2nd, and a 3rd THREE drafts away? You're missing a 1st and 2 slightly better players.

Kampf is a slightly overpaid, hands of stone 4th line center and a 1st for a 25 yr old RD who has put up his 2nd 30+ pt campaign in 3 pro seasons (he gets a fairly insulting raise to 2.5mil)?

Just weak offers.

And Domi who has the singular UFA signing for Treliving that's actually delivered more than hes paid, isnt signing for less just for term. Hes on his 6th team in 8-9 years, and he'll get a raise

And UFAs (and their agents) generally dont take well under market deals for a year with a vague promise that theyll get more money on their next UFA contract from a team they've never played for

Stephenson is going to get paid more, Crouse cost more than that package has to offer and Roy is looking for more term.
