Why Kotkaniemi? In this deal im sure the sharks would accept but wouldnt other people be candidates for being dumped first like orlov?

Kotkaniemi plays 9 minutes a night. 4.8 million for 6 more years.

He's a borderline ahl player

Why would Orlov get dumped? He's the second best D man on the roster right now. The candidates to go are Staal and Fast. Everyone else has something to offer

Except Staal has an NMC and Orlov has a giant cap hit and presumably a better player coming to replace him in 25/26. Would be easy for the canes to get a cheaper but just as a effective dman so they can fit guentzel again

There's not anyone as good as Orlov in the free agent class. He's a genuine top pairing D man, and that is where this class lacks. It's easier to keep Orlov, whose going to be essential to luring our best prospect out of the KHL since Orlov is his boyhood idol, and move Staal or Fast.

17:05 a night apparently means top pair now.

How are you going to move staal he has an NMC? Orlov also wont be on the team when Nikishin comes over. And Orlov is not playing at a value on par with his contract, although he’s not that far away ~2 million overpaid.

Find a team he'll waive for. He's from Thunder Bay, his brother plays in Philadelphia, he was drafted by Pittsburgh so thats three candidates already. There will be a team he'd waive for. Orlov will be here, he'll be extended, and he's playing at a value on par with his deal right now. This is why you can't just look at box scores. Orlov is playing on his own on the third pairing because Chatfield SUCKS, but he's STILL got that pairing to one of the best xGA in the entire league
