A compromise on Zegras

Created by: Caufield
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 30, 2024
Published: Mar. 30, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I see a ton of ACGM that trades 5th to 8th OA worth of value for Zegras, which is too much. I also see some that only give late 1sts and a mid prospect, which is too little.

A realistic in-between would be 11 to 13th OA worth of value

I will make the same argument as in the other thread. How can you look at Dach's pre-trade production and Zegras' pre-trade production and come to the conclusion that the 2 players have equivalent value?

I will also mention, the Habs got a steal on the Dach deal.

The difference is when we traded for Dach, it was almost like trading for a prospect. Yes, he played games in the NHL, but he was only 21, so its more normal production wasn't incredible. Trading for Zegras is for a roster player, and production has to be better when trading for a Roster player than a prospect.

Logic aint going to work w/ducks fans that I’ve encountered here. They live with the what if mindset. What if Zegras is a 90 point player so he automatically deserves 90 point player return.

Look what he did at 21 & 22! Way better than Dach. Imagine the price for Dach if he had even 1 x 60 point season.

It be high for sure (Dach does have a way better repertoire than Z though: much bigger and stronger, great defensively, those things boosts a players value a lot)

Apparently not with Habs fans either! Look how bad Anaheim was in the seasons he put up 60+ points.

Listen if it's not Zegras, it's not the end of the world, but the Habs need to end the "slow & steady" rebuild. It has not worked for any team. Either bring in vets, or trade for youngish prospects.

Points are actually the number one booster of value, and Zegras has a lot more points per games played.

True, but GMs are not ignoring this season, that is a straight fact

Sure. Which is why we "might", and I stress "might", have a snowball's chance in hell of acquiring him for futures.

Zegras is overrated.

He's also worth more than a pick just outside the top ten in a bad draft and Barron...

Maybe ig, Wouldn't it be a better deal for both parties to trade for a mid-1st and add Newhook on top?

I love Newhook. I would hate to let him go in order to hold futures. But if it was the only way, I would do it.

Newhook was totally worth the price we paid. I think he's gonna be a hell of a middle six player for this team for a lot of years.

The thing you're missing his past, present and future production DOESN'T MATTER!!!! Anaheim has Zegras locked up for 2 more years and after that he has 2 more years until he is an UFA.

So Anaheim is holding all the cards they ask what ever they want for Zegras. Especially if they don't want to trade him!

You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different outcome.

The 5th to 8th in value might not be enough…especially in a weaker draft year like 2024. I’d offer Montreal’s 2024 1st and 2025 2nd or conditional 2026 pick based on performance/appearances. Something similar to Debrincat 2022 Trade

That’s definitely not happening lol. Honestly this is a really decent draft, with easily 10 players with elite potential

Dachs defensive metrics were not good at the time of the trade

I don’t see any reason for Ducks to flinch.

As for draft, ya never know, 2017 was supposed to be a dud year, and looks pretty good now. But I think 2024 will be worse that 2023 or 2025…or most recent years.

I don’t understand why ppl think this is a weak draft. Eiserman was the clear number 2 pick a few months back and is still dominating while scoring at a high level yet many prospects have been playing so well with such promise that they have passed him and Eiserman has fallen around the teens. There are 21-23 really good potential players available this year.

Then again that NHL9000 guy thinks Celebrini isn’t better than any of last years top 5 so he’s clearly got an opinion, a wrong opinion but nevertheless.

We have no reason to get Zegras, so it's not happening if Ducks are gonna be stubborn.
As for the draft, 2024 will likely be better than: 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018. And be on par with 2020, and maybe 2017
