Consider this as Part 1: excellent defenceman Colton Parayko in exchange for 8th overall selection in the stud-filled 2020 draft's 1st round right shot right winger Jack Quinn, 23 years old and ready, once he returns to action, to be a core piece up front for the Blues as players like Saad and Hayes continue to age and Buchnevich possibly moves on.

Then Part 2: solidly developing depth center (3rd line I'd say for sure) Alexey Toropchenko, and slightly big-bodied D-man Matt Kessel in exchange for right shot D-man Connor Clifton (4 goals, 17 points and +11 this year), the RFA rights to right shot D Henri Jokiharju, and a 2nd round pick, which I wanted to make a 2024 2nd round pick, so consider it a 2024 2nd.

Stl 2024-25:

Binnington - Hofer

Krug - Faulk
Leddy - Clifton
Perunovich (RFA) - Jokiharju (RFA)

Buchnevich - Thomas - Kyrou
Neighbours - Schenn - Quinn
Saad - Hayes - TBD
Walker - Sundqvist - MacEachern/TBD

Buf 2024-25:

Luukkonen (RFA) - Levi

Byram (RFA) - Dahlin
Power - Parayko
Samuelsson - Kessel

Skinner - Thompson - Tuch
Peterka (RFA) - Cozens - Benson
Greenway - Toropchenko - Krebs (RFA)
TBD - Kulich/TBD - Rousek/TBD

Sabres end up with what certainly looks like one of the top three D corps in the NHL, and the Blues get a dynamic young right winger and a couple reasonably decent D.

Blues Decline. D would be our biggest weakness and we are not giving up our number 1 d-man without getting one in return.

We have plenty of forward prospects already, especially on the wings. Would love Quinn, but not at the expense of blowing up the defense

As they rightfully should. smile

By the way, putting Krug/Faulk as top pairing while languishing Jokiharju on 3RD... bruh. You've misread the STL situation quite a bit.

Don't see either team doing this. I suggested an option of these two teams but it was Parayko for Power and then Buchnevich for other pieces including Savoie. That has more possibility than this one for several reasons:
1. (As already mentioned) Parayko needs to bring in a replacement top pair D
2. BUF isn't moving Quinn without an absurd return. And I don't see this as the case
3. The Parayko out of STL has really died down over the course of the year.... really since he signed his extension.

Young forwards are a strength of the Blues current roster and prospect pool. Defenseman and young defenseman are a dire need for the Blues. I can see a world where the Blues would explore something around moving Parayko (Though they wont with the desire to be competitive sooner rather than later) but there would have to be much more surety on the backend coming back as opposed to Quinn being the main piece.

I can't imagine Jokiharju has hardly any value league wide anymore. He's an NHLer sure, but he's following the trajectory of a bottom pairing guy, his draft position doesn't exactly matter anymore.

Toropchenko should not be a throw in piece, but he also shouldn't hold the amount of value it would probably take for the Blues to move him. He's played his way into a higher role this year, whether or not his skillset suits it. He's got scoring touch, a fantastic motor, and is physical with alot of size. In the spot we're at I'd be willing to bet he's one of the least likely to be traded Blues in the next couple of years.

Kessel, is probably playing to a level that is very similar to Jokiharju already. I don't think his ceiling is quite as high, but I also think with the amount of game Jokiharju has at the NHL level already, it's hard to bank on a ceiling being met, or really him progressing much more than he's currently at.

Not a knock on Quinn at all. He's a fantastic young player. But if we're gutting very productive pieces with control, and the pillar of our defense. The structure needs to be much much more geared towards advancing the defense either long term or near term. This does neither. We can very realistically fix our secondary scoring issues internally or on the UFA market. We can't fix the mess of a defense this would create in UFA or via the draft as we most likely wont be picking in the top 5 in a long time.
