Hawks decline, one might argue Smith is a dump at a $5m cap hit and 33 years old and only putting up 37 points

He's on pace to put up 43 pts per 82 games this year and the Hawks could eat half his salary and dump him for picks at the trade deadline. Plus, he is a vet that will add leadership to a young team and is only on a 1 year contract. I am fine if you balance out his worth with some pick swaps.

Hawks decline. They aren't going to spend picks on one year rentals, and especially not for a player who likely has no clear spot on next season's roster. Some team might give you a pick for Smith but it won't be the Hawks.

I'm not sure he has much value at the TDL at a $2.5M cap hit. 43 pts certainly doesn't justify $5M so that is at the cost of the Pens to move him at $5M for 43 points regardless of what the other team's intentions are.

Also, Hawks have leadership, that's not an issue.

I am sorry, but no clear spot on next season's roster? Smith's point production would be 3rd on the Hawks this year. I think he is a legit NHL wing who easily fits on the 2nd line next year.

Retained I think Reilly easily gets a 3rd next deadline. And in the meantime he is better than Blackwell, Entwistle, Donato, etc.

Yes, no clear spot. Hawks need at least one and potentially two legit centers for next season, not more wingers. Hawks have Bedard and Dickinson as centers for next season. After that, nothing unless Luke warms up to Guttman. Playing AA and Donato at C is not the answer. As for wingers, by lines for next year:
L1: Hall and Kurashev
L2: Reichel and AA
L3: Foligno and Raddysh or Anderson
L4: Donato
And I haven't included Dach or Slaggert. One or both who could make the roster next season. And without a play driving C on his line, Smith's offensive production isn't going to be any better than AA or any of the other wingers the Hawks are rolling out this season. Sorry, but I don't see Smith as an "upgrade" that the Hawks are adding without getting paid to do it.
