Description
So, not a habs fan here. But so I’m just curious, is the long term plan to have an LHD on RD or trade a bunch of LHD prospects. Also at what point/year is Matheson being traded? Same with Savard. Also is the plan to start competing after the Armia contract is over? What’s gonna happen to the Gally and Anderson deals? Also how good is Lane Hutson supposed to be? Like a #1 D? And finally, next off season Leon Draisitl will be a UFA. Is that a contract the Habs are willing to sign?

I’m sure the Habs will move some of their LHD prospects, and maybe even Harris and struble for other players that fill needs. And Hutson is hopefully going to be a top 4 D and be our PP QB. And I don’t think Montreal would sign Dari considering he’s gonna want a big contract and doesn’t really fit Montreal’s timeline, all though it would be cool to have him.

Edit: also I see Matheson possibly traded at next deadline if the offer is right and Montreal isn't competing still

If we take Hughes at his word ( and we have no reason not to since he has thus far been pretty open on everything) he wants to be a playoff team in 2024-25, that would mean he is going to go shopping big time this summer.

As far as Matheson and Savard go, I don't see either being traded until we know Hutson,Reinbacher and Mailloux are going to be full time NHLers. Even then, I can see the Habs extending Mathesonand Savard to short term deals. I hat the idea but Guhle may be one of the guys moved for help in other areas. As of right now though the plan seems to be playing Guhle on the right and moving 2-3 of Harris, Struble, Barron and Kovacevic in the offseason.

As far as Hutson goes, his ceiling is Hughes or Makar, his floor is a more offensive Harris, most likely he ends up as a more offensive Spurgeon. Any way you look at it, he is a guy we are definitely keeping until we know where on the scale he is going to land.

Gally and Anderson are going to remain Habs until their contracts expire. Hughes and MSL have both said they expect Anderson to get back to being a 20+ goal scorer next year, so reading into that, they are planning on having him on the roster. Gallagher, I feel like they are just keeping around for the lockerroom and work ethic, he has literally put his blood, sweat and tears into the organization, So they will remain loyal to him, if only out of respect and to show other veteran players that the organization isn't just going to run them out of town near the end of their careers as they have done in the past. That should help with FA's being more willing to sign in Montreal than they have been in the past.

You've had 2 interesting and distinct perspectives above, but I will add that:

Matheson is probably on this team until someone steals his spot. It may not happen, but we all hope it does.

If Hutson becomes a #1 LD, I can see Matheson sticking with the team anyway and the Habs trading Mailloux and continuing to play Guhle & Reinbacher on the right. I don't think one player is better than another just because he's younger, and offense starts from the Blueline in the modern NHL.

Draisaitl is not gonna hit free agency unless he wants to. I doubt he does.

He also said that it will be difficult to make the playoffs next year because almost all the teams missing the playoffs this year will want to be in the mix for a playoffs spot next year. He added that he won’t rush anything to make the playoffs soon.

I could see him add a veteran FA if the player want a 2 year contract.

He’ll might trade Armia in the offseason since his value increased. Like you said, I could see him trade a D or 2z
